I am in my early 50's and Im not experiencing hair loss, but Ive been considering getting a wig to wear when I really want my hair to look good. I would love to get a wig similar to my hair but better.I was looking at raquel Welch wigs and watching a few videos and some of them look really amazing, but they are not cheap. I'm afraid i would spend the money and not really wind up wearing it. Just wondering if there are women out there that incorporate wig wearing into their lifestyle and the pros and cons and also, do people know you are wearing a wig or not?

My mother is a breast cancer survivor and the Raquel Welch wigs are what she wore when she lost her hair. My mom was still teaching then and wanted to have a wig instead of being completely bald. I think she felt it would be less shocking for the kids as well.

Anyway, my mom and I cried looking at some of the wigs. (we were probably more emotional amount the whole cancer situation, but seeing bad wigs made her feel even worse about it all). But then, we found the Raquel Welch wig.

I guess what I am saying is go for it! She got tons of compliments on it, and when her hair finally started to grow back, she had her new hair styled like the wig.

In my 40's I was tired of coloring my hair and I liked the convenience of having the wig so my hair would always be styled. I liked it but my family teased me so I stopped wearing it. I still have it for one day I tell myself.

I wore a wig during chemo. It was really cute and made me feel human when I went out of the house. I got hair compliments from total strangers.:lmao:

But OMG, they are uncomfortable. Hot and itchy. I can't imagine how awful they would be over your own hair.

I would try some on before buying to make sure you could stand it.

when a women is sick she should get one if it makes her feel better. But just to look better if your healthy, I dont like that, dont get me wrong Im all for women having all kinds of fake parts, but hair creeps me out

Some women wear wigs on vacation, especially cruises, so they can jump out of the pool, pull on their wig, and go to dinner without fixing their hair.

Any time a woman loses her hair it's very emotional. My wig made me feel so much better I cried with relief. I went through a Phoenix summer wearing one. It was hot and tight and occasionally gave me a headache, but it was a necessary evil. My hair grew back with too much curl, but at least it came back!

My wig did look natural, but one night I was sitting at an outdoor restaurant under a patio heater and the heat melted part of the wig and made the "hair" kinky. Luckily, my natural hair had grown back enough to ditch the wig.

I had a pixie cut and when I wanted long hair I bought a hair piece. It was human hair connected to a headband with securing clips. I loved it and it made me feel better during the grow out stage. The key is to getting a quality piece. Sure it can be spendy, but so is getting your hair done at the salon. I would go try some on first to see what you are really interested in.

Also check out Godiva Secret Wigs. They look lovely and aren't that expensive.

I only know of two elderly ladies (in their 80s) who wear wigs on a daily basis. Their hair is too thin. They look all made up and ready to go all the time. They look great.

I have very short hair due to illness, and my family and i dress up (as different pop culture characters)to attend all sorts of conventions. I had given up doing so but recently a friend of ours told me about the wigs she was buying on Ebay that were inexpensive but comfortable. I bought a couple for under $30 and I love them! I think it's fun to do something different with your hair, and if you don't have much a wig or hairpiece is definitely a way to go! :)

My hair is a nightmare in high-humidity so I've often "fantasized" about getting a wig for vacation. Putting up with the "razzing :lmao:" is what's held me back, but if I live long enough to be one of those elderly ladies travelling alone I'm sure going to do it!! :thumbsup2

I'm blessed that vanity is my only motivation for considering a wig. Big  to all of you that have fought through health crises. That's a whole different discussion and you have my unflagging compassion and admiration. :flower3:

I agree with Pigeon....When I was bald, I had two really nice, attractive wigs (I think one was Raquel Welch, actually). I wore each of them exactly once. I got lots of complements, but LORD were they uncomfortable! Hot and itchy, and on one of them the Velcro tabs dug in behind my ears.

My best advice is to make sure you get a comfortable under-cap and be very careful about what the lining of the wig is made of.

An acquaintance got one for her chemo treatment made of something called cyber hair. It is, by far, the best wig I've ever seen. She did pay quite a bit for it....$1800 I think. But it looked gray, very natural and it made her feel better.

My mom does. I did not even know it. She said "do you like my wig"? I told her I did not even notice that she was wearing one.

Go for it!
