I was thinking about getting DD a piece of jewelry for her 18th birthday next year, and I started thinking (always dangerous...)

What are the pieces of jewelry you would consider "basic" for a woman to have? Other than an engagement and wedding ring, of course!!!! What are the things you wear over and over, and what stays in your jewelry box?? We all have lots of costume-type things, but other than my mother's string of pearls and an onyx ring, I don't have any "good" jewelry. So maybe I will add something for me as well!!

a decent, classic style watch. (think tank/rectangular face with a metal link band)

a "return to tiffany dog collar/tag necklace" very popular

pair of diamond stud earrings (size up to you...me, personally, I wear my big **** CZ studs! heheh)

My parents bought me and my two sisters diamond pendants for our 18th birthday.

I love gold hoop earrings - to me you can't go wrong with them...classic.

Pearl necklace, gold bracelets, diamond stud earrings. My parents got me a pair of pearl stud earrings when I graduated from high school (and a trip to WDW!!!) so I would include those also.

I like to tell SO..."You can never go wrong with jewelry"!

Every girl needs a simple pair of diamond stud earrings, and a strand of nice pearls.

diamond stud earrings, a nice bracelet, good dress watch, and pearls. I would even go a step further and say a nice right hand ring.

Tank watch for everyday I have a good old citizen
A fancy watch like a Movado
Pearls (set)
diamond stud earrings

DH for our wedding bought me a charm bracelet and has filled it with charms from our life together, charms that mean something to us.

I have to admit I have a thing for watches, I love them. I would wear one on each wrist if it wasn't so silly, and they are classic

I like diamond studs(from DH) or a diamond heart necklace ( a gift from my dad). Ring w/ my son's birthstone was a gift from my mom when he was born.

I like your idea. Wish I had a girl to buy jewlery for.

For my high school graduation I received:
Strand of Pearls and matching earrings
Sapphire Ring (my birthstone)
Since it's been awhile, I don't wear these as much anymore. I save the pearls for when I get dressed up.

My 18th birthday I got a Mickey Mouse seiko watch. Let me tell ya, I wore that watch for years....loved it. I still have it, but I have since gotten many more disney watches. ;)

I have a lot of colorful gems set in yellow gold or in silver/white gold which I wear frequently. I really like colorful gems, and love all the colors my birthstone comes in. Lately, I've been acquiring gemstones set as butterflys.

I have a lot of stud earrings in various stones/settings that I tend to wear in the 2nd hole in my ears.

Hoop earrings (any size or metal) are good, and I wear those a lot. I have in them various sizes and metals.

Charms....either as a necklace or a bracelet. Whatever style you prefer. Charms can be fun to collect.

I love necklaces, but certain ones catch my hair frequently and rip it out. So although I love byzantine chains, I have to make sure my hair is always up when I wear it.

Honestly, the only stuff I don't wear much is costume or fake jewelry.

Well, as you can see from my tag, anything REAL is fine with me. ;)
Seriously, I think it depends on what you want for her or think she'll wear. Does she like pearls? Does she dress like someone who would wear pearls? If so, go with those. Some people prefer diamonds and they can be dressy or casual.
A birthstone ring or pendant set would be nice.
An Omega necklace is cool because you can get her additional slides later to mark special events too.

I love jewelry.
I think a strand of pearls would be a wonderful gift, but not sure an 18yo would appreciate it as much as she might the tiffany toggle neclace. I got my DD a toggle necklace bracelet set for graduation and she wears it all the time.

I agree with the diamond stud earrings too (and I also agree with the CZ suggestion!).

I wear plenty of costume jewelry. I used to think I had to have 'real' stuff, now I know better ;) I wear what I like and it doesn't have to be 'real' or expensive.

I need a pair of pearl studs by the way :rotfl:

My wedding rings no longer fit (must get them resized!) so for everyday I wear a Swiss Blue Topaz ring and gold charm bracelet on left hand and wrist. On right side it's a garnet ring (birthstone) and garnet bracelet. Always wear gold oval shaped hoops, either small or rather large depending how frisky I'm feeling that day. :teeth:

Love pearls but only have a pair of pearl studs....rarely dress up any more where a strand for my neck would be appropriate. My jewelry box is filled with nice things I've gotten over they years but the things listed are what I actually wear.

Personally, I think a necessity is three gold chains: 16, 18, and 22 inches respectively. You can add charms/pendants/slides as you wish to change the looks. The lengths are necessary for the different necklines you would wear.

A good watch is also important (metal band).

I also agree with all who say a pair of diamond studs is a basic jewelry "must have" as well.

I still have the pearl earrings my sister gave me for graduation. Can't go wrong with a basic pearl earring, or possibly a birthstone stud or pendant.

I'd say a pair of diamond stud earrings are always a must. I don't know if these are outdated but the nameplate necklaces are always nice. I would just make sure she likes pearls before you consider them. I only say this because I personally do not like pearls. I think tahitian pearls are beautiful but pearls are not really my thing. Charm bracelets are big too. Its nice how you can fill them with items that mean something.
