Ladies: Switching BC pills

I have a friend who is switching from one brand of BC pills to another. Do you need a back-up for protection during this transition or should it be ok? If you do need one, is it usually just for 2 weeks?

I am not a doctor, and I don't play one on tv, but I have switched twice (three times since I went on the generic) since I went back on the pill, and I have never been told to use back up protection during the switch.

I would have my friend ask her doctor to be on the safe side.

It is advisable to use a back-up method for at least the first 2 weeks. I'm a pharmacist, and I can tell you if you ask 5 pharmacists this question, you might get 5 different answers Some studies do say no back-up is needed, others studies say it is . I am of the belief that it is always best to err on the side of caution, so I would recommend a back-up method during the switch over.

I switched the FEB. before my wedding so i could control my period. I got REALLY REALLY SICK..but that's a different topic for another thread..lol

My gyne told me to use protection for the whole first month...

I told her I'd use something for at least 2 weeks because that's what they tell you when you first start BC pills. She said her doctor didn't really give her a clear answer, she just said that's is the same strength pregesterone as her last pills.
