In another thread I just started regarding romantic ideas for proposing and such, it was suggested that proposing at a Character Meal would get a lot of attention.

My question to the ladies is this:

Would you think that such an idea for a proposal would be embarrassing or romantic?

My DGF(is that correct?) has said things that make me think she would be embarrassed at such a display, and the attention it would attract. However, there's a commercial on TV that makes her melt whenever she sees it--the "Diamonds are Forever" commercial with the guy who starts off by shouting "I LOOVE THIS WOMAN!!" and scaring a bunch of pigeons...this seems contradictory to me, but then I have a tendency to misunderstand the workings of the female mind... :earboy2:

So ladies, what do you think? Edify my feeble martian mind...

I personally would find it romantic especially if it was at Crystal Palace with Pooh. He happens to be my absolute favorite character so for me that would be great. However my fiance proposed to me outside under a tree by the building where we met and where we both work. He wanted it to be perfect and although that wasn't his idea of perfect it was for me because the question was what was so important to me. The answer was important to him but hearing him say he wanted to spend his life with me was all I cared about hearing.

Can I go with - both?

I was proposed to in a very public way. I'm not a very public person. I'm a sit by the sidelines and watch everyone else person. If I had watched someone else get engaged like I did, I would have thought it was very romantic and very sweet, and that I would be deathly embarassed if it were me.

Well then it was me. And I was deathly embarassed. It was still very sweet and romantic, and now I can appreciate the thought and intent behind it. But at the time, I wanted to crawl under a rock.

ok, I tend to be a rather shy, get red in the face type person in public. Yes, I would be embarrased, but I would love it! That would be so memorable and you would both remember it forever! Plus, it is always fabulous to have lots of people congratulating you. Great photo op too!

I got engaged during the fireworks at Magic Kingdom and even though it was very public, I didn't even realize that people were clapping until my fiance told me later, I was just so caught up in the moment. I am the type that blushes when there is a lot of attention on me, and I hate speaking in public, but I loved my public proposal!

IF your girlfriend doesn't like lots of attention doing a proposal in
a public restaraunt may not be the best choice.
If she loved the restaraunt, or loved a certain character, than
that could possibly counteract things, if she doesn't like
to be the center of attention, than it may not be the best way
to go. How does she feel if she is noticed in a public fashion?
Things go well, not so good?

The rose garden at the MK is very pretty, and has the castle
right in the backround. Doing it during wishes, or after wishes, in
the rose garden could work. Or just in the middle of the day when not
to many people are hanging out there.
Romatic setting, on the GF beach, or walking near the wedding pavilion?

Have fun.

I find that commercial very romantic too and I understand your confusion but the couple are basically alone and he is declaring to the world that he loves her on a romantic walk with only pigeons there to see it, and still the woman is embarassed. I think you know her well enough to know what she would truly want. That's part of why you want to marry her right? I think you can find your answer in your original post.

"My DGF has said things that made me think she would be embarassed by such a display."

You don't want to embarass her, you want to make her melt. What would make her melt?

I would not have minded a proposal in a Character meal but I wouldn't consider it particularly romantic. I would have considered a proposal during Wishes very romantic or on a carriage or boat ride. My DH asked me to marry him every day for 80 days in every possible way, on the last day he proposed with a ring in front of my family. My favorite proposal was the first one when he asked me what I would say if he asked me to marry him. You know what will make her melt. I know you do. Good luck and congratulations marriage rocks!

i was proposed to right after Wishes, in front of the castle while it was raining! i had always dreaded the public proposal (my DF is verrrry dramatic), but when it actually happened, i did drown out all the people around us. (as wishes had literally just ended, there were tons of people exiting the area in front of the castle!) we heard applause and felt a bunch of flash bulbs going off. the next morning, DF was very excited to tell the princesses at cinderella's breakfast that we were newly engaged!
i think she'll be fine getting proposed to in public. you'll probably even get a little extra pixie dust because of the moment! :) GOOD LUCK!

I think that it is a great idea proposing at a character breakfast - like you want to! It is definetely romantic and how can she not love a proposal at WDW, no matter how it is done.

My fiance proposed to me on one of the horse-drawn carriage rides in Fort Wilderness - it was great! It wasn't public my fiance thought that I wouldn't enjoy the attention either but I really didn't care - I love Disney, I love him and would love any way the proposal happened.

I am also a fan of that commercial :cloud9: .

Of couse it would be romantic! you should do it after the wishes fireworks. Any place would be fine- I wish that my future husband would do something like that!

I DON'T like alot of attention so a character meal to propose would NOT impress me at all.

But then, for some people, it would be very romantic. It's individual and "whatever floats your boat".

I would find it romantic but not very original. I would want something that has not been done to death for my proposal and dw seems to be the biggest place for propoosals and weddings. Maybe a helocopter ride over the the Magic Kindom during the fireworks display would do the trick, but I am sure your girl will appreciate any thing you do as long as it is from your heart.

My DH proposed to me while with our family on the Magical Gatherings Fireworks Cruise. He waited til the Fireworks were over and then over the loud speaker we were told that there was one more surprise waiting for us. I never had a clue it was a surprise waiting for me.. The music started, it was "our song", and I still had no clue. Hubby went down on 1 knee and I still had no clue..duhhhh... Out came the ring and down came the tears and as I kissed him he said, umm does this mean Yes?? I didn't realise I didn't give him an answer until then..Haha.. (almost 4 years ago now)

That is super sabby!!!LOL!! You have a good man there girl. My first husband proposed like this.

He invited me over to his parent's house for dinner like we had done many times before. I noticed things were dark when I drove up but thought he might be in the back or something. There was a note on the front door that said. " come in."

Once I got inside there were hershey's kisses in a line with a note saying follow the kisses. I followed them into the bedroom where there was a huge bear on the bed and rose petals everywhere. THe bear had a note saying. I will kiss the grown you walk on, I give you all my heart, I will cherish you forever, and we will never be apart. As soon as I started to turn around to look for him, I heard the crinkle of paper and there he was standing with two dozen roses in one hand and the ring in the other. He gave me the roses and dropped to his knees and asked me to marry him. Once I said yes, he placed the ring on my finger and flipped the ceiling fan on and hundreds of cut out hearts fell all over us. The end!! Men are great.

Hubby two proposed at the same beach we are having the ceremony at in April followed by our disneymoon.

I think it would be very very very romantic!! It would be very special to her..I think she would be so excited and "caught up" in the moment that she wouldn't even think about being embarrassed.

I would be embarassed, but that's just my personality. Why don't you ask her family members? You can ask her dad at the same time that you ask him for his daughter's hand *nudge nudge wink wink*

Perhaps she melts at that diamond commercial because she likes diamonds, or she likes the romantic zeal of that commercial :) Or, because that guy is a HUNK!

i'm with you, princess-rn..she will be so caught up in the moment even if she thinks she would be embarassed, she won't even notice. its romantic

If it were me I'D notice. You don't know the person, how can you say whether she will or won't notice? It's a personal thing.

Proposing at a character meal doesn't have to be "public" necessarily. You don't have to involve all the characters...you don't have to have an announcement made...you don't have to get down on one knee and draw everyone's eyes to you.
You can take her to the meal, eat & enjoy, and when dessert is served - simply slide the ring across the table. The people around you may not even notice.
You'll still be in a very "magical" place, but without a lot of commotion.
If you're a down-on-one-knee kind of guy, then pick somewhere that the whole room won't stop when you make that motion. If you get down on one knee in the middle of a character meal - you're sure to draw attention.

I agree strongly with the poster telling you that you knew what to do. You know her better than any of us strangers do. Trust your gut & intuition.

Good luck & Congratulations ahead of time!
