My doctor has suggested a D&C in order to clarify some underlaying medical issues I've been having. Has anyone ever had one? My dr informs me I'll be "in the hospital for a day" however all web sites I see say it's an out-patient procedure. I'm meeting with the dr on Friday to finalize the plans.

Thanks

I had a D&C for a miscarriage, and my sister had one for medical issues..

With mine, I didn't stay overnight...just long enough for the drugs to wear off, for them to check for bleeding and to make sure I could go potty :)

I'm not sure how long my DS stayed, but I know both of us don't remember a thing about it... so, no pain :)

I had a D&C post miscarriage. No pain, outpatient, little down time.
I think the important reason is "underlaying medical issues" that may be the reason for the overnight stay. I am sure your Doc is just giving you a cushion of time, you may still go home the same day. Best wishes!

I had one after a miscarriage. I was not totally out, but "twilight" I think it is called. I remember some cramping, but not clearly, and no pain. I was out of the hospital within about 3-4 hours. It could be that your Dr expects yours to be more involved, and that is why he wants to keep you overnight.

I also had one (well, 2 actually...about a week apart) for a miscarriage. Both times I was put under sedation but not general anesthesia...made the recovery much better so I would request that if it's an option. I think I was in and out within a few hours. Basically just had to wake up and get some good pain meds. Well, let me clarify. My first D&C gave me absolutely no pain, because they had missed everything, so naturally I thought it was a breeze. After my second D&C I was cramping/bleeding badly so I did require narcotics. Hopefully since you are having yours for something other than a miscarriage you won't have any pain.

I had 6weeks after a very early miscarriage. Mine was done under general anathesia and the worst part was feeling crappy from the anathesia. I remember some general achiness, but otherwise was okay. Got it done in the morning and went home in the afternoon. DH had to accompany me as no driving allowed post-op. stayed home for a couple of days and was then fine.

I've had two D&Cs after miscarriages and both were outpatient procedures. I was on my way home afterwards within an hour after the procedures. With one I did have quite a bit of bleeding, but with the other one I didn't have any so I guess it could go either way.

I have had two D & Cs. One about 13 years ago after an early miscarriage. It was quick and I just remember having some aches, no pain really.

I just had a D & C this past Dec. to remove a polyp in my uterus. When the doctor was doing the surgery, he discovered that I had thickened lining that hadn't shown up on the pre-surgery ultrasound so he removed that. I was discharged from the hospital within a couple hours of getting out of surgery. The doctor prescribed me pain medication before I left the hospital and I was like, "what is this for?" because I was expecting this one to be like the first. I definitely had some moderate pain....nothing major but I am glad my DH had filled the prescription.

I think everyone woman is different and it depends on what the surgery is being done for. I would just listen to your doctor carefully and follow his instructions/advice. And plan for rest the days following.

Good Luck and I hope whatever issue is being investigated gets resolved quickly!

I just had a D&C on 4/16 this year after a miscarriage. For me the physical aspects of it was a breeze. I followed my nurses recommendation of taking the pain medication on a schedule the first 24 hours regardless of whether I felt like I needed it. I don't know if I would have needed it or not but I never had any physical pain. I had it done on Thursday and was home within maybe an hour or two of coming out from under anesthesia. I did stay home Friday, but I don't know that I really "needed" to....the doctor just told me to so I did and didn't really think much about it.

I had one last spring and left the same day. My Dr does them on Fridays in order to give a three day rest. I felt a little "scraped" up inside but no pain to speak of. I rested that day,and took it easy the weekend. I felt fine and would have been able to return to my normal routine had I not had the weekend.

I had one exactly a year ago and it was a piece of cake. I was supposedly not under general anesthsia but I was out. I had a few cramps. The only thing I caution about is not doing anything strenuous for a week. I over did it and I started bleeding. Other than that it was the easiest procedure I have ever had.

Did he say for a day as in a 24 hour period or the day as in you go home after the drugs wear off?

My DD had two after miscarriages and both times came home in the afternoon.

Good luck.

I had one quite some time ago, and don't remember any pain. I went home after a couple of hours, and didn't have pain afterwards, either. I had a light sedative and didn't fall asleep, but I did get very emotional and started bawling and shaking.

Good luck to you.

Eta - my D&C caused scarring in my uterus and I had to have a hysteroscopy before I could get pregnant.

I have had 3. Came home same day with all of them. Had cramping with all three (never had cramping with my cycle so I really can't tell you if they were bad or not). The last time they accidentally collapsed my uterus. I didn't have a cycle again for over a year...

I've had a couple for miscarriages and 2 for fibroids. With the miscarriages I went home same day. With the one for fibroids, the first one I went home same day...the 2nd I stayed in the hospital overnight as it was a bit more "involved."

Talk with your doc and have an open mind. The 2nd one for fibroids, staying in overnight was expected...and I needed it. It was a bit worse than the others.

Take care of yourself!

I had a D&C for a miscarriage a few years ago. After I came out of surgery, I was in the hospital for maybe an additional hour.

the doctor I spoke with yesterday wasn't totally clear just "you'll be in the hospital for a day". I meet with the doctor who will perform the procedure this Friday. But as another poster said, I'm going in because of a fibroid or growth as well as to figure out why I'm bleeding so much, so maybe I'll get to stay all day and night! I have to say our local women's hospital is wonderful, I alsmost look forward to some good pain meds and a break
