At the college I work at, we did a big display about the "Iron Jawed Angels" who fought so hard to get women the vote. It was very illuminating. They were some very courageous women.
Honestly, not really. I think I was excited to vote twice - the first time when it was for Ronald Reagan and recently in our local election for Sheriff because I felt strongly about the candidate. Typically, I have felt more like I was voting against someone rather than for. In '96 I didn't even bother as I believed most of the country was fooled by Clinton's 'charm' and Dole didn't stand a chance anyway.
I do . And thank you for pointing this date out, Monkeyboy. I wasn't aware that today was the anniversary of the passage of the 19th amendment.
Some of my friends and I watched an interesting movie a few months ago about the women's suffrage movement. It was called "Iron Jawed Angels", I think. Maybe made for HBO or Showtime. Did anyone see it? Some of those women suffered greatly (physically and emotionally) as they fought for the right of women to have a voice in the polls. It became quite brutal at some points.
The funny thing is that a group of us from church are getting together tonight to discuss our upcoming topic of feminine spirituality, women, men, God, history, etc. I will certainly point out the significance of this date to everyone there. Please don't get the wrong idea - we are not a bunch of feminists who see men as the enemy. But there are past and present issues relating to women that need to be addressed in our personal lives, in the Church, and in the world.
I registered the day I truned 18. I was very excited. Then I found out that that is how they did jury selections in Houston. This was quite a few years ago.
