Labor Day Planning

I'm confused. I thought Labor Day weekend was to be avoided especially the actual Monday (I don't know much about this celebration as I'm from England). But now I've seen on these boards that Labor Day is not usually crowded. So far I made plan to avoid the Saturday, Sunday and Monday but I really would prefer not to if possible

I think because schools in the states start up prior to Labor Day so families there take their vacations before. Our kids in Canada don't start until after labor Day.
