If anyone is planning to be driving to or from Disneyland on July 16 or 17, be aware that they're closing the 405. I realize it's not right AT Disneyland....but be aware that this is going to cause chaos on all freeways in the vicinity.

"Car-mageddon" possible

Not too much of an issue for people heading to DL since the planned construction is between the 10 and 101 freeways. It will definitely add more congestion to the other freeways but LA traffic is always a pain.

Well, those 500,000 cars will all have to go somewhere else......and the dates stood out for me because of course Disneyland's birthday.....not sure they're doing anything big this year, but all those cars going elsewhere may make the normal crazy congestion even worse. And perhaps even more difficult, is an out of towner not sure what alternate route to take if 405 is in their plans.

Just wanted a head ups for those that may concern.

We're traveling down (south) on 5 to DL on the 16th. Anyone know if there's a carpool lane for that stretch?

ConnieB, this is definitely a helpful warning for out-of-town visitors using the freeways. The section of the 405 that will be closed is on the "westside" (as the locals call it) and pretty far from the OC and Disneyland. IMHO, I think the biggest impact to drivers going to DL for the weekend may be guests like helenb who are coming from points north on the I-5. Many motorists coming south to the LA area will probably take the 5 as an alternate, leading to heavier than normal conditions.

helenb, unfortunately, I don't recall their being a carpool lane for the section of the 5 between San Fernando and downtown Los Angeles. I think that's the section that is the biggest risk of congestion for your trip. In looking at the overview map (link below) of the construction, you may want to use the 210 as an alternate for that section of your trip. I don't know if the 5 south will really be that bad, but it's nice to have options planned out in advance.

Some resources for those looking for specific details:

Official Metro.net Website for the "405 Project"
Facebook Page: www.facebook.com/405project
Twitter: twitter.com/I_405
And this overview map (pdf) from the Metro.net site does a good job showing the section of the 405 that will be closed and alternate freeway routes.

As long as they get that mess cleaned up by the 19th when I have to fly out of LAX!
The only stretch of the 5 that has a carpool lane is the last 10 miles or so bfore you get to DL, but then you can exit on the left!

Thank you for the information Armadillo! It always pays to check in advance!

Ok, first I have to say the name, Sepulveda, reminds me of Star Wars everytime I hear it. :rotfl2:

Second, thanks for the info. We are leaving DLR on the 16th and going to my sister's house from there. I forget all the freeways we have to take (there are about 5 of them- crazy! ) so I will check and see if that is one of them. I don't remember that one, but there are so many I just don't remember what they all are.
