L.A. cruisers you think a passport is necessary?

Anyone on the L.A. mexican cruises think a passport is a must? I know Disney said it's optional at this point. I'm debating on getting them. I don't plan to leave the country any other time in the next 10 years and $80 seems a lot to spend on an optional thing. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

We're doing DCL Mexico 7/30/05 and we happen to have passports already but if we didn't have them, we wouldn't be getting them just for the Mexico cruise. I think as long as you have the documentation they request, then you're OK. I think you have to have a picture ID and your birth certificate (with a raised something or other on it). I'd check with DCL just to ensure you have what they require, but for sure you don't need the passport and hence, save yourself some money. Use the $80 for a shore excursion.

We live in Hawaii Kai and will be going on the June 4th Mexican Riviera cruise.

I'm not an LA cruiser, but I will say this about them, they eliminate one form of ID.

You need either

a) Birth Certificate AND a Picture ID

or

b) Passport


If you intend to cruise more than once on any cruise line it's well worth it to get one.

I agree!! One of the reasons I decided to get our family passports was we do cruise every year and it is easier to pull out one form of ID. Also, last year my Mom surprised me by asking me to go on a 14-day cruise through the Panama Canal. We left from Costa Rica (which now requires you have a passport) and I was sure glad I didn't have to scramble around at the last minute to get one. Also, my Mom travels out of the country several times a year and if anything were to happen I wouldn't have to worry about getting a special Visa or anything. HTH

We're planning on getting passports this time around simply because this will be the fourth time in 4 years that we're going out of the country. We've been to Bahamas, Mexico, & Canada and we think it's about time we get a passport since who knows where we'll be going next. It'll be nice to not be fumbling around with everyone's birth certificates and IDs and just hand the CM our passports instead.

If you're like most of us, you'll be hooked on DCL and will want to plan another cruise ASAP.

We've decided the price for the passports is worth the reduction in hassle. Also, we're on the CA->FL repo and initial reports were the curacou required passports.

Looking forward to having them on our next cruise later this year.

Thanks everyone for your help. My friend and I are taking our families on our first cruises ever. I don't think we ever thought we'd go on another one after this, but you're right. Who knows? Heard that Dawn? We're sailing on the June 11 cruise so I guess we have time to go get those passports.

whenever you visit a foreign port (not a US territory) you need to go through immigration at the next US port you hit ... having a passport makes going thru immigration a snap IMHO.
