we are going to akl in october and our very excited about having a savannah view but in practically ever post i have come across every requests arusha savannah zebra trail--we also want to request arusha savannah so my son may see the zebra--
so my question is for anyone who has stayed on arusha savannah kudu trail what were the down falls if any(are there just as many animals) and also how far is it from the furthest point to the buses,pool,mara--are we talking 5-10 minutes or more like 15-20 minutes...
thanks in advance

We have stayed on Kudu trail and Zebra trail and found the animal viewing much better on Zebra trail for 3 reasons:

1. More animals on Zebra trial.

2. Better located feeding boxes on Zebra trail to attract the animals.

3. Less tree cover on Zebra trail to block the view.

When we checked in last time we asked for Zebra trail, but were assured by the front desk that we would have a "wonderful" view on Kudu trail. We were very disappointed. Most of the time we could only see the pelicans, the larger animals were too far away to see or the view was obscured.

If I had to stay on Kudu trail again, I would at least request a room at the end of the wing (far from the lobby) where there would be less obstruction. But I would really push for zebra trail!

Hi Redmic,

If you could see pelicans from your room that you were not over looking that Arusha Savanna where the zebra are. You were overlooking the Sunset Savanna which happens to have the most birds on it. Half of the Kudu Trail overlooks the Sunset Savanna and the other half over looks the Arusha Savanna.

We had a wonderful room on the 2nd floor, Kudu trail, Arusha Savannah, and saw many, many animals. Sometimes they seemed only 25 feet away. We were about 3/4 of the way down the corridor (the room was very quiet and right around the corner from the laundry room) and it was probably a 5-7 minute walk to get to the pool, restaurants, or the bus. It definitely wasn't 15-20". We didn't mind it at all, except coming in from the pool when we were wet.

We had a wonderful time and want to go back again. Since we're DVC members, we haven't stayed in regular resorts the last trips, but usualy go to AKL to eat twice during our stay.

Hi kmc,

If seeing zebra is important to you then I would reconmend that you request a view of Arusha Savanna and leave it at that. The Arusha Savanna can be viewed by rooms on both the Kudu Trail or the Zebra Trail. If you request a room on the Zebra Trail there is a chance that you could end up overlooking the Uzima Savanna which does not have Zebra on it. If you request a room on the Kudu trail you could end up with a view of the Sunset Savanna which has the most birds. If you do a duel request, ie Arusha Savanna and Zebra Trail since no requested are for certain they could think that they are doing good by granting your request for Zebra Trail but that room might be facing the Uzima Savanna.

I would request a view of Arusha Savanna and leave it at that unless you have any medical requests to add.

Hi,

Kudu trail and Zebra trail share the same savanna - see map

http://www.casshew.com/images/akl/aklmap.jpg

The other side of Kudu faces the sunset savanna and the other side of Zebra faces the pool.

Our room was on Kudu and we had animals below our balcony all the time - it is a bit of a walk to the main elevators, pool, restaurants.. much closer from the zebra trail.

>>^..^<<

thanks for all of your responses...

our plan is just to request arusha savannah and second floor (if possible) as that is most important to us .i just wanted to know if anyone has been really disappointed staying on the kudu trail and the reasons why...also good to know that it is under a 10 min walk to everything

and for anyone who might have stayed on both how did they compare
thanks again

To clarify Tiffany, we were definitely on Arusha Savannah. We were facing the exact same savannah each time, but there is a walkway outside that sort of splits it in half. As you are facing the savannah, Kudu trail is to the left of the walkway and Zebra trail is on the right. The animals seem to prefer the Zebra trail side, and there are fewer trees there.

We were in 2285 on 2 trips-it was a walk to the pool and bus, but had amazing animal viewing-everything but Zebras right outside our balcony. we are going in2 days and can't wait!

So you saw Pelicans on the Arusha Savanna? In your first post you stated that you saw Pelicans from your room on the Kudu trail. I have never seen Pelicans on Arusha Savanna side of the Kudu trail. Very interesting. When we are back at the lodge in Jan of 04 we will have to check that out.
