KTTW and gift card question

My boys (18 and 16) will be in their own stateroom on the Disney Dream this summer. Can their room have gift cards tied to it separate from our room? I don't want them to have access to our credit card, necessarily, but they have been gifted several Disney cards this year that I would love them to be able to access for incidentals on board. Is that possible? (I'm so new to all of this!!) :-)

I'm not sure about whether their KTTW cards can only have gift cards on them, but I'll point out that gift cards can be used directly in the gift shops. But not for things like popcorn, or smoothies.

I believe the minor will have to have an adult guaranteeing his expenses -- either by credit card or cash. The 18-yr-old can set-up his own account as either cash or with a credit card of his own.

Are both boys actually booked into the same cabin? I didn't think DCL allowed an 18-yr-old to be lead on a reservation with a minor, unless that minor is his/her own child. Usually such situations get booked as 1 parent + 1 kid in each room; DCL doesn't really care where you sleep, though. But in that situation, you would have 1 parent guaranteeing the charges of the minor anyway.

Enjoy your cruise!

That's what I'm thinking, also. The child's card would still have the credit card backing it up, but, if there were gift cards, those would be used first. What I'm not sure on, is whether the gift cards can be specific to each child's card. As in Brian has $50 in gift cards, but Suzy only has $30. Will Brian's KTTW account show $50 in gift cards to be used before the credit card kicks in? And Suzy's KTTW account show only $30 to be used before the credit card kicks in?

Or, more likely, the whole reservation's account has the credit card back up and the gift cards are applied to the whole account (to be used first).

There has to be an adult 21 or over in a stateroom with children under the age of 18.
So if you have already booked your cabins the 16 year old is probably assigned to one of the adults in your party.
But once on the ship you can sleep where ever you want. But you will need to get extra key cards so you can open the other cabins. Just be sure when getting off and on the ship that everyone has the key card with their name printed on it and not the extra key.

That may be a sticky point, though they may be able to work around it if Mom & Dad can use just 1 KTTW card for their charges. 2 adults in the same stateroom can set-up different accounts, and I believe separate gift cards for each, but not for a minor child.

Assuming the 18-yr-old is booked with Mom, have the 18-yr-old sets up his own onboard account as cash and applies his own gift cards. That means the 16-yr-old is booked with Dad. Dad always uses Mom's KTTW for charges, and sets his own account (for the stateroom with the minor) to a cash account and applies the 16-yr-old's gift cards. I hope that made sense... but it does rely on Mom & Dad essentially putting all their charges to one KTTW.

I get it.

Thanks!! A little more complicated than I thought it would be, but...it's DISNEY, so who cares???? :-)

Let us know how it goes. I would have thought you could use a gift card as the only authorization for your kids, and thus impose a "limit" on them, but I haven't actually tried this, so I don't know if you can do it ahead of time, once on board, or not at all.

If you try it, you can come back and tell the rest of us how it worked!

Unless something has changed, no it's not possible to put limits on specific KTTW cards for kids. A minor's onboard account must be assigned to an adult who will be responsible for payment. You can either allowed or not allow charging, but it will be back to the stateroom account backed by the lead or assigned adult. You can stop by Guest Services at any time and ask for a print-out of charges, which will be listed by individual. Gift cards can be used independently at the shops but nowhere else onboard.

Enjoy your cruise!

I asked when I got on board last year in March if I can place a limit per card and I was told yes. I gave my 7 year old daughter at the time $50 to spend and she was able to. But we also didn't push it past the 50.

If so, that's a big change. In the past we've been told that you can't put limits on individual KTTW cards. You can only turn the charging off or leave it on.

And kid KTTW cards had to be backed up by whatever payment method the parent's cards had, or charging turned off.

When I cruised in February on the Fantasy of this year I asked if I could put a 50 gift card on my daughter's account (she's 10) with that being her limit. They said no I need to give her charging privileges with my CC as back up. I didn't do it.

Also we had 2 cabins and all 4 of us had our key cards set up to open both doors. They didn't give us separate key cards for each cabin.
