Or can you pretty much get a table at the time you walk in?

For lunch in all but peak seasons you can usually walk right in. Dinner you might have a short wait in moderate seasons. During peak times you should always have a reservation.

At peak times during the busy time of year...yes. Off hours and seasons...no. Generally, we call the DDE dining # an hour or two before we'd like to eat. We've never had a problem at Kona with this strategy. In May, we were seated right away for dinner, while we noticed some walk-ups waited a good 30 minutes.

Kona doesn't seem to get packed with Ohana's next door. We've never eaten at Kona Cafe but Ohana's on several occassions and I never noticed a crowd there. However, PS is always a good idea anytime.

I ate there last week and had a 5:10 PS. We were there until about 6:30 and it never really got full. Maybe by the time I left the tables were full but I wasn't too conscious of people standing around waiting to get in. That was mid-June. July or August may be a different story.

My advice is if you have your heart set on eating in any particular place, make a PS. It's free (with certain exceptions) and you can cancel it later if you change your plans.

I'll let you know. We have dinner there exactly one week from today   And I made a reservation because there are 6 of us.

In April we were able to walk in for b'fast with no waits each morning while we stayed at the Poly. I have heard, however, that earlier times are harder to get into with people going very early before the parks open. By the time we went each morning, the parks were open already. Love it there!!!

We ate at Kona the last week in April. It was one of the few places that had a space available for 7 people that night. We had to have a sort of late PS, but we were able to make one, at guest services. I'd say, figure out what night you want to go, and then go down to guest services at your hotel and make the PS there, if you don't know before you leave for Disney. We had an awesome dinner, but I will say that at 7 at night, there wasn't a table available.

We do bkfst at Kona each trip and never made PS. We usually get there around 8:30 or so--. Once in awhile we had a short wait, but most often get right in. It's usually busy, but not mobbed. Should add that when you get to the Poly and walk upstairs, you'll see a crowd standing around and think "oh no"!! BUT the majority of those are waiting for the character bkfst at O'hana-.

I would make a PS. Whenever I've been to the Polynesian I've always seen a lot of people waiting to get in.
