Ok so, we had 5:15 ADRs for this past Sunday Evening at the Kona Cafe....arrived on time-were seated on time. Waitress-EXCELLENT-she was funny, happy, attentive-kudos to Cathy! Our glasses were never half empty. Setting is nice-we had a view of the waterfall-partial anyway.
My DH ordered the Prime Rib-it was pretty bland and tasteless...as were his mashed potatoes.
I ordered the Cocoanut-Almond Chicken it was ok-i wouldnt order it again or reccommend it-MY OPINION-and the salad with strawberries and nuts it came with was very sweet and didnt compliment the chicken at all-i left most of it.
My kids both had the pasta with mozzerella (which they love) with grilled chicken-neither of them ate it...they said it tasted funny...My DH tasted it to try and prove them wrong...he couldn't-he said it tasted like bad tomatoes. Cathy wanted to exchange it-but by then we were already letting the kids share with us. I was hoping they'd remove them from the bill, but no such luck.
My mom too ate the prime rib-she enjoyed hers-lots of pepper she said. And she was starving arfter a hot day walking around MK on just a coffee and danish from 10 am....
My father had the scallops and shrimp-and nothing was left on his plate. He said it was excellent and the scallops were cooked to perfection. (we all wished we ordered his dish).
WE decided to skip dessert. We were all kinda ready to leave and get deesert in the park. Wearing our anniversary pins-the waitress brought us 2 chocolate creme puffs and whipped cream-it was really nice of her. They were great.
Altogether our meal was about $167.00, no alcohol, and I kinda felt like a free dessert puff didnt make up for it. I am happy to have been able to have afforded to eat there, and enjoy the scene, and be in disney. I ate my entire peice of slighly over cooked chicken and some of my hubby's mashed potatoes siliently wishing we were eating someplace else.
We will not be going to this restaurant again unless we are on a DDP and nothing else is available. Smiles to all that enjoyed there meals. We may have just gotten a chef having a bad day. NO worries, wishes and a coke float made up it.

Boy - I'm right with you! We saved Kona for our last night meal, and it was pretty disappointing. As you said, most of the meal wasn't horrific, but just sub-par. And our server was also great!

Let's hope they take the time to correct the problems, so Kona can be the great place it usually is!

Wow! That's way too much money to spend on a meal that is so sub-par. You could have sub-par at your local Applebees for much less!

thanks for your review. i am so sorry to read still another negative review about kona. we have enjoyed this restaurant over the years - i wonder what has happened? we have reservations for november at kona - perhaps i need to find another restaurant!:confused3

We really enjoyed our breakfas here in August. Sorry you were disappointed with your meal. For the price, it should be excellent!

We didn't enjoy our meal there, either, and our steaks had almost no flavor other than pepper. It was a waste of dining credits, but we'll know next time.

Please tell me the breakfast is better... **pretty please??? **

So sorry you had such a so-so meal at Kona. We were there for dinner a couple of weeks ago and had fabulous food...so it must just be luck of the draw on who's cooking that night. I guess you got the cook who only knew how to do scallops.:rotfl: Too bad you didn't try the other desserts, the banana creme brulee was outstanding, as was the apple stack.

I heard the breakfast was really good, but seriously, for that price-we not gonna attempt to try it again. We are going back in a few weeks and this restaurant isnt in my plans. :scared:

We had a wonderful breakfast, including Tonga Toast (yeay!) at Kona last Jan. We liked Kona so much we went back for lunch a few days later and it was also very good, a great place for a midday break from MK. We're going to try a dinner next time , just have to because of our great times and good food we've had there.
