Kona Cafe - My Truth About Series

I ate twice at the Kona in late October. Once with my family for lunch and once with my dad for dinner. All of loved our meals. The food was great and the service was fine. It can get noisy, but I would go back in a heartbeat.

Had breakfast at the Kona Cafe in October, and dinner in July. Both meals were very good!:thumbsup2 In fact, I have an ADR there for my trip in April. I am really looking forward to that teriyaki steak again!

Thanks so much guys! And yes, I do have a place in my heart for the teriyaki steak.:cloud9: I guess Kona is most likely where I will fill my final reservation spot! Thanks!:thumbsup2

And I'd love to hear from anyone else who is dining at Kona in the future or who dined there recently!

EDIT - I've wanted to make a change to my thread for a long time but never really knew how to best address the change. Because my threads deal with individual restaurants, they often do not engage much discussion because they are catered toward one thing. And other times readers feel they cannot post unless a comment is relevant to the review in the first post. I am changing the title of the thread to allow for a completely open discussion of the restaurant.

Enjoying the honest exchange of opinions...:thumbsup2

I think time of day or evening makes a big difference in the atmosphere and noise at Kona.
For both our dinners there, we were the first to check in for reservation for the evening- meaning we opened the restaurant and were the first to be seated and served:woohoo:. We did not find it to be noisy, and have always been seated at a table and not a booth. I think the booth seating would definitely contribute to to the "Dennys" feel ;)that a previous poster mentioned.

We have always had exceptional service at Kona- in fact, our server has been serving at Kona since it opened and she was our server during both visits, though over 4 years apart.

One thing that I love about Kona- you get good portions of all the foods listed on the menu. Your plate will be well-balanced.
Meaning that when you order the steak with broccolini and mashed potatoes, you will get the steak, the potatoes, but you also get a nice-sized serving of broccolini. The same is true for the Pork chop with potatoes and collard greens- you actually get more than a teaspoon's worth of greens and they will be mouth-watering delicious! (In many WDW restaurants it can be a challenge to get a balanced plate- and you may have to give up your potatoes to get more green veggies.)

Yes, the apps are wonderful, and the bread- to die for, and we've always had good desserts too.
Looking forward to my next Kona dinner- October 2010 !!!:cloud9:

What about adding "dinner" to your title?

Only because Kona is such a great breakfast place - it probably deserves its own separate review for that meal (have you been there for that - that's my favorite breakfast in WDW).

Good job on the review though, can't disagree on the noise factor, we just tune it out and we're there for breakfast, so the noise doesn't bother me much at breakfast. I think the 'Ohana crowd/line is the biggest contributor at breakfast time.

As to the posters commenting on the "truth" aspect of it - in the words of Steven Colbert:

"Truthiness is 'What I say is right, and [nothing] anyone else says could possibly be true.' It's not only that I feel it to be true, but that I feel it to be true."

Truthiness: The quality of stating concepts one wishes or believes to be true, rather than the facts.

I don't think we have an issue here with truth or truthiness! Just one person's opinion, like any review of anything.

Absolutely agree! I'm an English teacher, so I totally agree with Stephen Colbert. This is the OP's 'truth' about his experiences - he's not saying it in a Jesus, "I'm the way, the truth and the light" finality sort of way. It's just his truth about what he experienced. Upon reading the moderators' responses, I felt a sort of censorship vibe...and that's a dangerous area to be in. I don't think he needs to change his titles at all - if people don't know that they are reading someone's personal opinions, and it's not the "gospel truth", then they may struggle with many aspects of an Internet message board. :thumbsup2

OP's reviews are great! I review the same sort of way, as it provides lots of different aspects in which people can base their decisions about whether to dine here or not.

Tiger :)

Enjoyed the review! Kona is loud no doubt about it and to me, it has the look and feel of a coffee shop.
Which, in fact, it was when it was the Coral Isle Cafe.
Without outer walls, the place will never be a quiet, out of the way spot to dine.
Always wondered why they didn't leave the place as a coffee shop and open the "better" restaurant where Tangaora Terrace used to be.

With the change of title and intent of this thread, the moderators took a few minutes to discuss where this thread should go now.

Reviews are one person's opinion, and what the review board was set up for. There is some discussion amongst those posting on the review threads, but it's not an open discussion about a particular restaurant.

Open discussion is great, it's what the DIS is made of. However, an open discussion about a restaurant belongs on the main board where everyone can discuss a particular restaurant.

Since the OP wants to change their review to an open discussion, we are going to close the review thread (this one) and invite him to start an open discussion thread about Kona on the main board.
