Are there any Kohl's employees out there who can help me help my neighbor? She applied for part-time work at Kohl's to bring in some extra holiday money and was offered a position working "softline." Does anyone know what that means?:confused3 She also has an offer at another retailer and wants to weigh the pros and cons.

Can anyone help me to help her?

Thanks!:flower3:

Softline in retail refers to goods that are soft - clothing, bedding, etc. Kohl's is mainly a softline store, with no to little hardline - electronics, appliances, etc. I don't think that is a description of a type of job that I have ever heard -- maybe it just means working in the soft goods area of the store vs. the small section where they sell coffee makers and such, or the perfume area, etc.? Or perhaps it's to distinguish between working the floor in those areas vs. being a cashier as your main job?

Softlines does refer to clothing/bedding type items as opposed to "hardlines". Shoes, toys, jewelry, housewares, home decor are all hardline type departments. I would think your friend would just be in one of the clothing departments during her shifts.

At Target, "softlines" is clothing...

But bedding, towels, etc... are "domestics"...

So I would be inclined to think that they are offering her a job in the clothing department. Putting away from the fitting room, straightening hangers, folded shirts, that kind of thing...

That is true of most retailers.

Softlines usually refers to clothing and not necessarily things that are "soft".

Softlines is clothing, hardlines are things like sporting goods, domestics is bedding etc.

Your friend will be working in the clothing department if she takes the position at Kohl's.

I work at Kohls and softlines is anything that is on a hanger. Womens, misses, mens juniors, intimates, boys, girls and infants/toddlers are softlines.
Hardlines are anything that comes off the truck that can't be hung on a hanger/rail. Domestics, housewares, jewelry, accessories, luggage, shoes, toys, seasonal, mens basics and kids basics are hardlines. Working softlines is much easier because hardlines involves alot of bending and lifting. Your friend is lucky she was offered softlines. She will need a comfortable pair of shoes as she will be on her feet and moving around all of the time.
Hope this helps :)

Thanks for all of your help! ~ stickfigureartist- Do you have any idea what type of hours part timers get per week? Her manager said that it was hard to tell because a computer determines staffing needs. She was also offered a part time clerk job at a local grocery store and is deciding which job to take.:confused3

These are types of questions someone should ask the prospective employer. She should say exactly what is 'softlines' and what is the minimal number of hours part-time workers get? You might get one store that is really busy and someone here could say part-time gets 25 hours a week and another store is less busy and gets 15 hours a week. Only way your friend will get correct answers for her prospective store is to ask and there is nothing wrong with that. There are many well meaning people here but no one can give you and exact answer and your friend needs to find out on her own for the best and correct answers.
