I need help!!!!

I am looking at purchasing an ereader. No, it won't be an ipad. I wish. But it won't be.....just can't afford one right now. Plus, this might be a birthday gift:cool1: If Im lucky:)

My first thought is a KOBO VOX. Any thoughts? I have been told that when reading these in the sunlight, they are near impossible to see because of glare. Is this true? And that you can't adjust the lighting on the screen (make it brighter or darker)? Can someone give me insight to this. What do you think of this product if you have it? Where do you get your ebooks? Lots of free stuff? What sites?

Second thought, Kindle. First worry, I have heard it's very Americianized and not so great in Canada? Is this true? That it's not easy to get books for? What are your thoughts on this.

Lastly, the Sony. Just really my last option I guess. I know nothing about it.

I don't know much about these products. Would be my first time making a purchase of this type. Im somewhat good with a computer but not great. Need help with this. Which may be better and why. Where are good sites for books. What you can do with these?

Please, any info I can get would be FANTASTIC:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

If you want it primarily for actual reading, I would go with an eInk display reader (like the Kobo Touch) over an LCD display (like the Vox). I can read my Kobo Touch for hours with zero eye strain, an LCD screen can quickly cause eye strain.

I love my kindle! I've had it for just over a year and use it every day. It has e-ink and is really easy to read in the sunlight. The downside to the Kindle is that you can't access Canadian libraries but I haven't had any trouble finding lots of free books. I have 435 books on my Kindle and have only bought a handful of them. There are a couple of sites that I get daily emails telling me which books are free that day.

I've never had any trouble downloading books actually way to simple, I'll never be able to read them all.

I also have a Kindle 3 with e-ink and LOVE IT. I have never had any trouble with getting any books I wanted, and neither has my sister who has one too.

E-books are available on the internet and aren't very limited to a country. And like PP said, there are lots of free ebooks available.

My favourite thing about my Kindle is that it automatically converts a number of files into Kindle files so I don't always have to dload Kindle files. That opens me up to even more ebooks.

Skip the Sony, a neighbour of mine just got it and can't figure out for the life of her how to work it. She's able to use my Kindle and her daughters Kobo no problem.

I have the Sony Touch e-reader and love it! Never had an issue, the battery lasts much longer than I thought it would and it is easy to use. Also bought the sony reader case with a light so I can read it in the car, on the plane, or while the kids are falling asleep in the hotel room! :goodvibes

My friend was given the newer touch version for Christmas and she enjoys hers as well.

My Dad and DDIL love their Kindle's.

I am sure it depends on what you read but they both have found lots of free books. I also heard a rumour that Kindle will be in some Canadian libraries this year.

Everybody has their own opinions. Best way is to read a comparison online and actually see these readers in real life for yourself. That way, you know how it feels and looks like. You can find Kindles at Staples and The Source (don't buy from them, you can get it cheaper direct from Amazon.com).

I was coming to post a similar question.

I've been looking at purchasing a tablet/e-reader for my mom. She would use it mostly for reading, checking e-mail and writing the occassional e-mail.

I was thinking the Nextbook 8" Premium e-reader would be good. Now that I started looking at this thread and going over my notes on the Kobo Vox, it looks like it would also be good.

So hard to choose, especially when it's for someone else.

Love my Sony e-reader, especially the built in light (but, of course, using it drains the battery faster). HATE the Sony software that you need to use; it's slow and has some of the strangest quirks I've seen and isn't straight forward at all. Also, you can't read and charge the battery at the same time...which irks me.

But other than that...I really do enjoy reading on my Reader :)

Love my kindle! Amazon has amazing customer service, the device is easy for even non-techies.

As far as library use for Canadians....i have an "out of state" library card for the Free Library of Philadelphia. There is a yearly fee but you can read their library books on your kindle. It is super easy to use as when you check out the book it directs you right to the Amazon site to manage it.

Book prices are comparable across most of the devices. I find most of the books I read are cheaper at Amazon than at Chapters/Indigo (for kobo) but that isn't true for all of them.

although it has internet access, I wouldn't suggest it for that.

I started with kindle a few years ago, now there are five in my family. We all use the same Amazon account so only one of us has to buy the book and all the rest can read it too. You hear so much about Amazon locking you into their store but it just isn't true.

I looked into the Nextbook more and you can add Amazon apps so that you can also read books from the Amazon site.

I think that's the one we're going to purchase.

I have a Kindle 4 with eink and love it. I have absolutely no problems with getting books. I have over 500 books and can honestly say that maybe 15-20are actually purchased. I just buy them right on my kindle. I just download online or receive them for free from different websites. Don't let it scare you that it's an american ereader. I have a couple of friend who have Kobo and hate it.

I have an iPad with both the kindle app and the kobo one and tbh I am considering buying a kindle as well. The iPad is heavy if you read for a long time and gives me eyes train, plus I can't see the screen in the sunlight. Both my sisters have kindles and love them

I have the Kobo touch and love it, I can download books from the Library.
My friend has the touch and her husband just got the Vox. He dose not like it, he has been having a hard time getting books from the Library.
He has been calling Kobo for help and they did not know how to work out his problem.:sad2:

DH has a Kobo Touch and loves it. Just bought one for DD for her b-day, but was considering upgrading it to the VOX so that she can at least do Facebook on it, and watch movies. but we've been searching reviews and are finding the following complaints:
1) battery life of the VOX is lousy ... dies after less than 7 hours so won't be good on a drive from London ON to Disney. :(
2) device randomly shuts down for no reason
3) doesn't always work properly and getting help from Kobo appears to be a challenge

If anyone can comment on these issues for the VOX, I would greatly appreciate it! She's really torn right now about whether to upgrade. TIA

I've heard the Vox isn't very good. I'm looking at the Nextbook Premium 8 and it has access to the Kobo store and a 2.0 megapixel front camera.
