Savannah is 93 miles from the Florida line and about 2 hours to Jax. I would allow around 2.5 hours if you're pulling a camper. Once you get to Jax, take the 9A South exit. It's really tricky with the construction so keep an eye out for it. It's right past the airport exit. This will take you on the east side of town and keep you out of the cluster downtown.

From Jax, as long as I-4 isn't backed up too bad I'd allow 3 to 3.5 hours. Hope this helps.

Donnie, have you stayed at the Savannah KOA? If so, I would love to hear what you thought of it. We are thinking of going to Savannah for a long weekend, and I would love a recommendation of a good campground.

Savannah South is our regular overnight stop on the way to FW. It's a nice campground - clean, quiet. I can't really say too much more than that since we just pull in, do a quick set up, have dinner and crash. It's about a 6 hour drive from the KOA to FW.

I am also considering the campground at Skidaway Island. Do you know anything about that one? I think that there will be more to do at Skidaway, but we are going on this trip more for Savannah than anything else. We will be bringing our daughter and son-in-law along on the trip and they've never been camping before. We will all be staying in the RV together (along with 2 small dogs). Any suggestions on which one will be better? We will only be staying for 2 nights.

I think the big sell for the Savannah South KOA is Savannah itself. I believe they run a shuttle bus into Savannah from the campground, and a lot of people use the campground as a base camp. They are pretty dog friendly there. There is a large pond for fishing on the campground and a pool and small rec room. My wife likes the store there and the staff is very nice. Savannah is a nice city, interesting visit. I don't know about the Skidaway Island KOA, never stayed there.

By the way, take Donnie's advice about the bypass. It's a nice route - beats going thru Jax and better than the western bypass - much shorter. Also, the nice part about the Savannah south KOA is the short trip to WDW. We get up early, eat breakfast at the Cracker Barrel in Palm Coast, and check in at FW by 9 or 10 am.

Great, sounds like a pretty good place. We are traveling with two small kids so I think that is as far as we'll be able to make it. We are hoping to little more that 500 miles that day. If anyone has any other suggestions I would love to hear them. . .even if it means we push a little further. We are hoping for a short 3rd day.

Thanks in advance!!

Holly, Skidaway is a beautiful cg. I attend a lecture the GA Air Quality Division does there every 6 months. As a matter of fact I'm probably going to take my pup when I go in October. I was just there 2 weeks ago and it was really clean. That side of town is nice as well.

Oh good! I'm pretty sure that's the campground that we are going to try! The people we bought the RV from recommended it, but a friend of mine that every year chaperones a 2 night 5th grade field tripthere hates it! Probably has to more to do with the people that she is there with than with the campground itself!

I agree. We stopped here on the way to our Easter '08 stay at the Fort. We prefer to take two days to get to FW from Maryland and Savanna is a manageable distance for the first day. We checked in about 8:00 p.m. It was a Saturday night and my impression was that there were some locals or regulars here the night we stayed. Nothing negative, just some vehicle traffic and sounds of good times being had late into the night. Our site was at a point where two roads converged and they were both well traveled. All in all a nice CG and someplace I would consider spending a few days.

Just for your info, Skidaway Is. is a GA State Park. It's a very beautiful campground, but there are no sewer hook ups...just a dump station. To get there, you will have to drive through a very busy part of Savannah. Another GA State Park you might want to look into is Ft. McAllister just outside of Richmond Hill. You can look up both campgrounds on the GA State Park website. Actually, the KOA you are refering to is located in Richmond Hill and not Savannah. Both may be about the same distance from Savannah.

I know this is a "stupid camper" question, but please remember we are new at all of this...if you need to dump your black or grey water before your trip is over, do you have to drive your RV over to the dump station or is there an easier way? We have only camped at FW, so we only know about campsites with sewer.

Holly,
Some campgrounds only have one place to dump your tanks. I'm sure running pipe to each site would be very expensive so this is an easier and cheaper way for them to just have a dump station. Most campgrounds who only have a dump station will have it well posted as to it's location.

Another poster also added that SISP is quite a distance from I-95 and you have to travel thru busy traffic to get there. This is true and IMPO I would only stay there if that was my destination and not overnight.

What Rt is 9A South? We're staying at Pecan Park RV Resort north of JAX so we can hit JAX early before rush hour. Is 9A closer to GA?

If you're staying at PPRV you will be north of 9A. Once you get on 95 in the morning you'll go past the airport exit and right afterwards is the 9A/295 exit. It's currently under construction and you need to be careful not to go 295S.A lot do is why I say this.

There will soon be a nice flyover constructed soon from 95 so one day this warning will be wrong. 9A is good road all the way to where you pick up I-95 south again.

I see you have a 5er so I'm going to assume we won't have to worry about low bridges. Looks like a good way to go. I just did a mapquest and it's only 5 min. longer, worth it when towing through a busy area. Thanks! :thumbsup2

That's great! Maybe by June the construction will be done...we can always hope.

So Donnie, if you were just going to Savannah for two nights, with a total of four adults in your party, would you stay at the KOA or Skidaway? We would be going mainly for Savannah, not because we are looking for a FW type experience. Does the KOA have sewer? And one more final question...if our black tank fills up while we are there and there isn't sewer, do we drive the RV to the dump stations or is there an easier way to dump the tank? Sorry for all these questions. One day Toby and I will be seasoned campers like all of you.
