Watch Oprah Friday, April 4th :thumbsup2

Please don't put Breeders in the same catagory as Puppy Mills. My oldest is from a breeder & my newest is from a rescue org. and I had to pass inperson interviews for both of them. And my DD was 6 when we rescued Dexter & because of her age we almost did not get him.

Like Louey said in responce to you, REPUTABLE breeders are certainly not in the same catagory as the millers , however, a backyard breeder, is just as dangerous as the mills in the fact that they may keep the dogs in better conditions but they have no regaurd for breeding known dogs that produce defects in there pups ect, they are pretty bad themselves, they think nothing over overbreeding a dog to death either. Usually gentic defects, temprament issues ect come out of these breeders which often end up dead or in , you guessed it, the local shelter or rescue.

Oh they are so bad, I hoping I can watch the show I am a bit scared. I am a huge animal lover, my DD7 saw the promos & wants to watch I think I am going to have to preview it first. But as others have said in some areas Shelters & rescue orgs make it hard to adopt. Around here you have to have a fence, my friends subdivision does not allow fences unless you have a pool. Most won't adopt if you have young children, most people want a dog for their kids. So are these rules helping puppy mills? And some prices on certin breeds are unbelivible >$1000 thats nuts, again this brings in people just wanting to make a buck aka puppy mills.

Here where I got my new baby www.petsconnect.org they also work with shelters. Dexter was dropped off in a night box at a local shelter with a brother. My son thinks he was put in a garbage bag, he hides when you change the trash cans, he was definilty hit & is very loving, hates to be alone.

Hi Kae,
I checked out the website petsconnect. That is a great rescue site, they have some beautiful dogs/and a ton of puppies  I applaud you for finding a rescue that did adopt to families with children. When anyone makes the decision to adopt rather than buy it does take time to find the one that works best for you. There are rescues that will adopt to a family with small children, no fence, no home visit etc.... then there are some that won't you just have to be patient. Thanks for your replies, I am trying to keep this on the first page until Oprah aires :)

I need to get my kids to dvr this for me today. I really want them to watch it...They know about importance of spaying/neutering and they volunteer at the Humane Society now I want them to see where those cute puppies in the pet store come from. :sad2:

I can't go in the pet stores around here because they always have so many adorable dogs in there. :sad1:

And yet, we as a society, do it to livestock all the time with almost no moral outrage.

Awesome post! :thumbsup2

My 3 long-haired Chihuahuas (sitting right here beside me now) were all rescued from horrific puppy mills. Anyone running one of those things should be shot on the spot. I have absolutely no sympathy for the "breeders" who run them.

Personally, I believe that anyone running any type of puppy mill should be made to sit/stand, if they can, inside a small cramped area for their life, eating what little scraps they are given, dirty water to drink and little to no medical attention. People might say, "Wow -- that would be so inhumane", but it is equally as inhumane for any animal to endure this as well.

Thanks again for this post! :thumbsup2

if someone purchases a puppy from a pet store, they have supported a puppy mill. end of story.

what i ask people to think of is not the cute little puppy sitting there, but his mom & dad who are probably living in some deplorable conditions somewhere.

that should be enough to have someone turn around and not contribute to the problem. you might "save" that puppy, but contribute to suffering of many others.

no decent breeder would ever allow their puppies to be sold in a pet store. no matter what anyone in the store tells you otherwise.

the other thing to know is that the US is no longer the only source for these puppies. China & Eastern Europe among other regions are now exporting dogs to the US, and we will never be able to touch those regions in terms of banning puppy mills. not to mention the potential for diseases those imported puppies could bring to the US.

there are 2 main things needed to end puppymills:
1) lack of demand
2) laws with teeth to shut them down and keep them shut down

thank you Louey for educating the public about this.

Christiane

And what do you think should happen to all those dogs currently in the stores? So the demand goes down. Those left in the stores will subsequently be either abandoned or destroyed. Most rather brutally.

Shall we just sacrifice an entire generation or two (or more) of puppies?

Sorry, but just not buying puppies from a store will fix this problem.
Tough laws need to be made and enforced.
Only licensed breeders should be allowed to sell to stores. Licensed breeders who are inspected often. The stores should also be upgraded and inspected often.

Okay. The show just started here and I don't think I can watch. I mean the tribute to Sophie is hard enough for me to watch. I need to get a big box of kleenex.

I didn't even know that dogs/cats in pet stores was still a common practice. Around here the only cats and dogs that are in the pet stores are ones that the humane society/planned pethood put there. We got one of our kitties at Petsmart, but we did not buy her from Petsmart but rather adopted her from the County's Humane Society. Had to go through the whole adoption process and everything.

It makes me sad that the pet store/puppy mill practice is still common. But I honestly don't know if I'll be able to stomach the Oprah episode today. :guilty:

Me too. I didnt even want to watch today because I knew how incredibly sad it was going to be.

I cried for the entire hour. But was truly inspired too! I can't have another dog in my home but I plan to pay for the rescue of some!

I just cried like a baby. Especially when they got to the part
where they showed how they select who they have to "you know" (sniff sniff)
( I just can't say it) , It was just sooooo Sad , I wish I had the money and a
nice big place to give those that no one wants a good home.

I hope this show gets the awareness it deserves.
