the extended service plan? I've decided on the Sony Alpha 300. This will be my first DSLR and I was wondering what you all think about the extended service plans. Of course I have visited several sites and bick and mortar stores and they all have different prices for their service plans. Just wanted to get the opinons of some "seasoned" DSLR owners

I don't have a suggestion, but I've also chosen the A300 for my first DSLR so I'm curious to see the responses!

Hopefully we will get some respones Its like the decision when buy a new car, you buy the extended service plan never need it, don't buy it and well...ya could have used it. LOL I was just wondering about DSLRs and if they have "extra" needs that would be covered under an extended service plan.

I never bought an extended warranty with my first four dslr's but I did buy one with my D300 because I plan on keeping it long enough to possibly need it.

I bought a 5 year mack warranty with my 7D,

what type of service plan are you talking about..

Ritz camera offers one that on the serface is definitely more expensive than some others, however it covers accidental damage which most plans do not cover

I'll double check the Sony one and Amazon's right off the top of my head I don't recall if it covers accidental damage. I do know in the 13 years I've had my film SLR I haven't needed anything....well it just recently stopped imprinting the date on the pics, and yes I changed the battery . But It was more important to me to have the date on the photo when my babies werre actually babies, now I can kinda tell how old they are in the photos

Sony says:

Accidental Damage from Handling Protection (ADH)

Accidental Damage from Handling Protection (ADH) plans offer the same benefits as the Service Plans and Replacement Plans, and will repair or replace eligible parts in your Sony product when it malfunctions due to breakdowns that occur from handling the product under normal operating conditions

The service plan covers all parts, labor and shipping costs to make sure your Sony product is repaired and delivered back to you. Coverage begins on the date you purchase the product.

That makes me think if I were to back over it they wouldn't replace it, LOL So maybe Ritz is the way to go.

unless they've changed it since I worked there, it would indeed cover backing over it,

I had a customer call me, he had been cutting firewood at his hunting camp, set his brand new slr on the tailgate of his truck. got in the truck to move it, forgetting about his camera, the camera fell to the ground and he did indeed run over it, fortunately he had purchased the ESP from Ritz, I told him to put all the pieces in a bag and bring it to the store along with his copy of the ESp,

he walked out of the store with a new camera..

I got my SLR at Ritz camera and did end up getting their extended plan because it covers accidental and dust/rain which is well needed here in the dusty desert. Its a yearly plan not really extending it out but Nikon had cards to extend the lenses to 5 years.

But for my camera equipment I have a personal article insurance policy. It is supposed to cover accidental damage, like dropping it in a lake, though I have never had the opportunity to test the coverage.

one difference between the Ritz plan and the insurance route, is that Ritz will replace the camera with a new camera , if the same model is no longer available they replace with a comparable camera, usually the newer version...

insurance usually factors in depreciation, so you end up putting out money towards a replacement

Best buy's gaurantee used to be purchase price. Now it is "comparable performance".

I won't be getting one for at least a few months, but I am enjoying shopping for my first DSLR after a lifetime of P&S. I am interested in the Sony Alphas, but also comparable Nikons, Canons, Pentaxes and even Olympus. What made you decide on the Alpha 300?

I was all set for the alpha 200 then the 300 and 350 were announced. I started reading on the DP review site. I like that the view screen could tilt so if I had the camera over my head (I'm short) I could tilt the screen to see what I was getting. I also like the live view feature, like with point and shoot, it will make it much easier for my mom or dh to take the pics since they are use to the screen, LOL. I use the view finder.

BTW, I was at sears today and the had the 100 for $799!! I said you have to be kidding, its been replaced with the 200 and there are now 300 and 350 models and they are under $799! Then I walked away, LOLOL

the problem is, when the A100 came out, there were fewer models to choose from and all dslr prices were higher, as more models come out and the competition grows, prices are coming down, but stores that already have
A100's in stock want to recover what they initially paid for them, so they don't want to drop the price and lose money, eventually they'll have to because who wants to pay more for an older model with fewer features..
