My friend and I were having a debate on if knives were allowed in checked bags or not when flying. I bought a cheap one yesterday while we were out shopping to have for snacks in the room, but she said I probably wouldn't be allowed to pack it, I told her it would be in my checked luggage, and not my carry on so I didn't think it would be an issue.

I have taken a knife (steak knife size) in my checked luggage before and have never had any issues. (You cannot take knives in your carry on, but I think they're allowed in checked luggage.)

Edited to add: Here's the link to the TSA page -- knives are listed under the "sharp objects" tab. It appears there are no restrictions to the kinds of knives you can put in checked luggage. https://www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/prohibited-items

Knives are most certainly allowed in checked baggage.

The only thing that is recommended for knives is that they be either sheathed or taped so that if a TSO needs to look inside the bag for any reason, they won't run a risk of being injured.

This explains it:

I remember buying an oyster knife in Seattle, and I wanted to take it home. There was no problem just checking it in. I had the original packaging, which was a plastic sleeve.

Heck - years ago (pre 9/11) I had a Swiss Army knife on a keychain. It had a sub 3" blade and the only thing I heard was "Just a pocket knife" as it was handed back to me past the metal detectors. Fast forward to this year where I get a gate pass to assist someone at the airport, but I forgot my knife in my pocket. The full body scanner actually picked it up. Since I had no place to leave it, I was given the option to either give it to them for disposal or forgo getting in. I just decided it wasn't worth it and I took it back. At no point did it seem like I was in serious trouble.

Thanks. I still have it in it's original packaging, so I'll just keep it in that until our trip.

I always pack a knife and a pair of scissors in a plastic shoebox, usually along with packs of muffins or something else that I don't want to get squished. That way, the knife can't cut anything (or hurt anyone who reaches in my luggage), and the shoebox is a helpful place to toss receipts, sunglasses, etc. in the room, and pack small breakable things on the way home.
