My husband and I are leaving for Disney on Dec 5 until Dec 14. We are going to celebrate our anniversary trip and I am hoping for a miracle while we are there.

He feels that it would be best for me to get a wheelchair for the entire trip. I had a knee replacement and I struggle to walk for long periods of time. Going up/down steps are a huge challenge for me. I also have cancer and have been going through treatments since the end of August.

I want to try to walk, but then he doesn't want to have to go and get a wheelchair. When we went in May, I had a GAC for my knee, but I didn't have use a wheelchair.

I just don't know if I should give in and get the wheelchair right away, everyday and also what all to let them know when I deal with the GAC.

TIA!

Just because you have the wheelchair, it doesn't mean that you have to be in it all the time. If I were you, I would get the chair and walk when I felt like walking. You can put things in it when you aren't in it, but you would have a seat there when you did need it.

I agree with your husband and say get the chair!

You definitely need at least a wheelchair. And if he is not used to pushing, you may even be much better off with an ECV, especially frfom azn off-site vendor.

If you click on where it says "disABILTIES" at the top of this page it will take you to the Index. One of the top items is the "disABILTIES FAQ" which will gives lots of useful information. I would strongly suggest reading Post #2 which deals with mobility/stamina problems and Post #6 which deals with the GAC.

Or, if you want an easier route to the FAQs, click on the link in my signature.

Yes, I second the suggestion to rent an ECV. There's a lot of walking at WDW, and a GAC will not help you between attractions, or to the bus stops, or around the resort.

A GAC could help you avoid stairs in queues, but Disney's standard answer for guests with stamina issues is to use a wheelchair or ECV.

I have a friend who had double knee replacements and she rented a manual w/c which she used part of the time to sit in and part of the time to push. It gave her some support while walking as she becomes stiff if she sits all day. I'd not want to worry about being worn out vs. having a good time on your anniversary trip, so I agree with your husband- better safe than sorry!---Kathy
