We are DVC owners but find ourselves needing to stay at Kitty Hawk, NC for a week. Its a wedding/family vacation situation. I have never been there and we need a place to stay for our family of 5. Does anyone have any advice or direction you can point me? Should we trade our DVC points, rent, or do something else.

I am really green when it comes to anything non DVC.

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What time of year are you going? If it is during the Winter months you may want to stay on the sound side of the island due to the wind from the ocean can be cut through to your bones cold and impossible to be out in. There is a realty company on the island called Stan White Realty that has all types and sizes of condos and houses. I would definitely rent rather than trade out points. Trading is in most cases an expensive option. You can rent a house after Memorial Day reasonably. The rates will not go up to Summer prices until mid June. We love the Outer Banks at all times of the year you just have to plan your location based on when you go.

I always vote for using DVC points for DVC. I think the best thing, if you can't go to WDW to use your points because of this trip would be to bank them for later. If you need to use them some how to make the NC trip work, then I'd rent or transfer to a member the points you won't use.

Trades out of system are not a good value unless you have so many points that it doesn't matter to you, or your DVC is your primary travel budget.

I don't know the area well enough to make suggestions of what to do but there are no RCI resorts on DVC's exchange list that are at all close to the outer banks. There are only 2 NC resorts on the coast and they appear to be more than an hour from Kitty Hawk. Also no CC options in the area. I would think a rental to be your best bet though if it's not peak season, there are other cheaper options as well such as renting a timeshare or a private exchange.

i agree that I would save my DVC points for Disney. You can google Outer Banks realtors to find houses/condos for rent. We've stayed at Duck twice and Nags Head the other time. It depends on whether you want oceanfront, oceanview, or soemwhere off the water. It also depends on when you go as to the availability and cost.

There are very few hotels on the Outer Banks. As PPs have said, you're best bet is to rent a house, especially if it is not during the summer. During the non-summer months, you can get some pretty decent prices on house rentals.

I would try to stay somewhere north of Kitty Hawk (Southern Shores, Corolla). Kitty Hawk is hit or miss with the house, because many of them are older and not as well built or maintained as some of the newer developments. Southern Shores is really nice, we've stayed there twice during the summer. It is more secluded and residential then Kitty Hawk.

Also, as others have said, I would either bank the points, or if you need the cash to pay for the Outer Banks trip, rent them.

If you are not going during the summer you can rent a house for a lot less than your DVC points are worth.

There are lots of realtors that rent and endless houses and condos

Duck is nice too - much better than the Kitty Hawk area if you don't mind driving for a bit (20 minutes, maybe?) We used to rent every year at Ocean Sands or Corolla, but they are both pretty far north if your target area is Kitty Hawk. As another poster mentioned, Kitty Hawk and Nags Head have older homes and the area can be a little on the tacky side (sorry, Kitty Hawk lovers.)

Lots of real estate companies rent houses on the Outer Banks. A google search will turn up plenty of big, reputable companies - Twiddy, Prudential, etc.

Yes, yes, yes! I totally forgot about Duck!! :)

There are two vacations we take every year - - DW in April and OBX is June. We love OBX. We tend to stay on the Rt 12 side, usually Duck, as we find it to be a tad more upscale.

What's the big deal? We just drive over there and come back home. It's just a buncha piled-up sand and a couple of tall lighthouses. :lmao:
