I have several ferals as well, but was fortunate to trap them as kittens while they were young enough to be socialized. The very first kitten I trapped was a hissy little thing but after working with her for many hours a day over a few weeks, we won her over and she is one of the sweetest, most affectionate cats I've ever known. Unfortunately we were not successful in trapping her littermate until a few months had passed. We had her evaluated by two people very experienced in socializing ferals and they both said it was too late to socialize her. We followed their recommendation to have her spayed and let her go. We continued to put food out for her every day but one day she stopped coming by. I continued to put food out for another 2 months but we never saw her again. So while TNR is sometimes the best option, most strays have a hard and short life.
