Kitchenette Question

I asked a CM this question and she couldn't quite answer me, so I figured I'd try here!

Some kitchenettes have stoves with a glass/flat top and others have electric/coils.

For whatever reason I need to stay somewhere with an electric/coil stove and not a flat/glass top.

Which ones still have the coils?

I'd be more interested in knowing what you can do on a coil top elec stove that you can't on a glass top!

The coils are going the way of the 8 trac (look it up). I'm not sure that there's any resort that has these thur-out.

actually it's kinda important to me.

We keep kosher dietary rules and I can "make" a coil top able to be used in the kosher kitchen and I cannot do the same with a glass top. So if I'm going to make a decision to stay in a 1 br b/c it has a kitchen I'd like to be able to use said kitchen

Ok! Good question.

I'm honestly not sure. OKW & VB were I think about the last places to be switched over. there may still be some unrefrubished rooms at OKW...but since it's not a "booking catagory" (type of stove top) I doubt DVC nor CRO could tell you.

Is there another alternative to using a blech? How about using a crockpot?

Our last BCV trip (Jan 2010) in a 1BR had a coil stove. As far as I know, they have not replaced the stoves to the glass tops in BCV, but of course, I couldn't speak for every room (no one could, right). It's always possible that there would be isolated instances of an upgraded stove in any resort if they had to replace an older one.

As best I can remember VWL had the coil top stoves when we were last there and they have not had appliances changed since that time. I'd say the same thing as BCV though that if a stove malfunctioned and needed to be replaced then it might be a flat top.

Actually, none of the kitchenettes have stoves at all. Only the kitchens (one bedroom and larger) have stoves.

But my guess is that it would be in an older resort that has not been renovated - perhaps VWL, BCV or SSR?

perhaps your best bet would be to call and ask to speak with a supervisior - explain your situation and see what they might be able to do.

You certainly can't be the first person to have this need!

I finally got a cm who could help me, and confirm what all of you had said!
My preference was VWL and I got confirmation from them that it's coils. I'll probably call up the resort myself just to make sure!

@DVCconvert - LOL!!! I enjoy the terminology I was more concerned with frying up some eggs for breakfast rather than a saturday meal!

It's my under standing that if you preheat the glass cook top and make the burner area glow red, the burner is considered koshered. The non burner areas can not be koshered. Is that correct?

We were told differently. It's one thing if you're switching btw meat and milk but not from not-kosher to kosher. But I know for a fact that there are differing opinions on glass tops, and furthermore that there are different types of glass tops altogether. So I'm sure every circumstance is different. But it's just easier in this case to avoid it altogether if possible!

Wow, in all honesty thanks! I just learned something today. It's so interesting how sometimes little things that you don't think should matter ARE important. I didn't know about that one.

If you call the resort's published number, you're probably going to get a call center, and they're not likely to have a clue about the stove burners.

When you do call, tell them that you need to speak to someone who's physically located at the resort. Tell them that you need the information for an important religious observance. Hopefully that will get you transferred through to someone who can answer the question.

OK, so I just have to ask a dumb question here. If you can't use just any old stove how do you use the pots, pans, dishes & utensils that are provided in the units? Do you travel with your own?? Just curious...

It's actually amazing how as soon as you say "religious observance" people will bend over to help you. Last time it was a room location request which wasn't taken seriously until I explained why I needed a ground level room and then presto! (I'm not saying that it's a way to use the system and I would never take advantage of it, I'm just pointing it out)

Actually yes, I'll have to bring all my own stuff. It's kinda a pain, but you get used to it after a while. (Actually you realize that you don't need too much and you can make do with very little!) We usually end up doing plastic cutlery and plates so we don't have to bring that with us. So it's really not so bad.

Does it matter if the "coil" is under glass? The glass top stoves at OKW actually have coils that are visible under the glass. I'm not sure if that means they are actually coils or just facsimilies of them, but would that make a difference?
