I was led to believe (by the kids) that it was a fusion of Disney characters and some more traditional Japanese anime characters, or themes.

It's a fusion of Disney characters, and a bunch of Japense video game characters from Square's Final Fantasy games, not anime characters. Anime is just japanese animation. The fact that they resemble anime characters is merely because they are Japanese and, stylistic tendencies and influences behaving the way they do, share some stylistic similarities.
