Can anyone tell me what Camembert is? and ... Can anyone tell me about soft shell crabs tempura and how to eat them. I have heard of them before on Emeril live.. but don't really know the correct was to eat them since they are cooked in the shell.
Thanks everyone.:o I would rather ask now and get help than ask the server in person. hee hee

it is a kind of cheese , so they r like cheese sticks, with red sauce.
very good ....
the crabs u just cut up and eat,

also very goood

Camambert is a cheese - possibly goat? I know I don't really care for it, but my sisters love the stuff! Maybe someone else can clarify. Soft shell crabs are eaten as is. The shell is very very thin so that you can bite right through it. If you can get past the looks of the thing, and the reality that you are eating the entire crab, they are delicious. I'm not sure how Disney serves them. I've had them on a sandwich and so the bun kind of covers them up! Delicious! They are kind of cute sitting there with their legs hanging out of the bun!

Now here is one food item that I tried but didn't care for. I have had soft shell crab on the east coast (never have seen it on a menu out west) and it was very good. On the ship it was way to crunchy and the sauce that came with it was too strong for my likes.

How do you eat it? well you take a fork and knife and start cutting away at it and you eat the whole darn thing. It's not like "normal" crab where you have to get the meat out of the shell. Soft shell crabs are "normal crabs" that have just reciently "molted" (outgrew their prior shell) and their new shell has not hardened yet.

Loved the camembart fritters! Wish I had some now,I 'm starving.

Camambert is a very soft cheese. So like mozarella sticks, but much softer inside. I'm a pretty picky eater and I loved them.

It is cheese. My DH is a big cheese lover and he really did not care for this appetizer. But people say to try it and if you do not like it they will bring you something else. One of my table mates and my self wanted to try creme brule (spelling???) but we weren't sure that we would like it so we both ordered another dessert and our server brought the creme brule for us to share too. Neither of us really liked it. It was just ok.

This is a little offthe topic/question... but a softshell sandwich ... hmmm make me hungary and want to fly to Maryland this summer to get one!!!

DON'T WORRY, YOU ARE NOT REALLY EATING THE WHOLE CRAB- THEY REMOVE THE LUNGS AND FACE DURING PREPARATION. SOUNDS GROSS, TASTES GOOOOOOD. (NEVER HAD THEM DISNEY STYLE THOUGH)

Oh this thread reminds me of a Monty Python Sketch. :D

SCOUT: Camembert, perhaps?
OWNER: Ah! We have Camembert, yessir.
SCOUT: (suprised) You do! Excellent.
OWNER: Yessir. It's..ah,.....it's a bit runny...
SCOUT: Oh, I like it runny.
OWNER: Well,.. It's very runny, actually, sir.
SCOUT: No matter. Fetch hither the fromage de la Belle France! Mmmwah!
OWNER: I...think it's a bit runnier than you'll like it, sir.
SCOUT: I don't care how blinking runny it is. Hand it over with all speed.
OWNER: Oooooooooohhh........!
SCOUT: What now?
OWNER: The cat's eaten it.
SCOUT: Has he.
OWNER: She, sir.

The best softshell crabs you'll ever eat can be found in south Louisiana. We have all the great seafood down here!!

The other posters are correct -- they've been cleaned already and can be eaten as served.

OMG does that sound disgusting!!!!!!:earseek:

Maryland is where I first experienced soft shelled crab. Way Yummy!

About the Softshell Crab Tempura...

I ordered this as an appetizer on the Magic as did one of our tablemates. Usually when I order tempura I get small, manageable sized bits of deep fried food.

Imagine my surprise when the waiter put down a plate with at least a 6-inches across fried crab in front of me, and definitely crab shaped! Even my tablemate, who hails from the land of seafood, eyed his crab a bit suspiciously.

My waiter must have caught me looking a bit daunted, came over to me and whispered "If you don't want it, I've brought you something else too." So he put down another appetizer he knew I'd enjoy, but I said I wanted to try the crab too.

My tablemate and I found them a bit tough to cut into pieces, and finally he said "Oh to [blank] with this, just pick it up and eat it!" :D

It wasn't my favorite appetizer on the ship, but if you're curious, I'd say order it and give it a try, and if you're really hungry you might tell the waiter you aren't sure if you'll like it and ask for another appetizer too.

One thing to keep in mind...soft shell crabs are in season in spring so the ones you're eating now are not "fresh"...not that this makes them bad, I eat "frozen food" all the time, but it could change the experience slightly.

Thanks the 4ofus, Maybe they will be fresh when we go the first week in March. I will definately try these.
