I posted this on the CB but thought it might be more useful here where it won't get lost.

Why be kind? Surely, you don't have to be. Especially when others aren't kind in return.

But in fact, kindness may benefit you.

Studies have shown our bodies release endorphins when we show an act of kindness. And further, with that same act of kindness, endorphins are released as well in not only the recipient, but those who observe the kindness, too.

Dr Herbert Benson, a Harvard cardiologist who has been involved in scientific research for over 30 years, tells us that... when we carry out an act of kindness, our body rewards us by creating a ‘feel good’ sensation, which boosts self esteem and well being. This experience has been termed the helper’s high. The response is triggered when the body manufactures chemicals called endorphins. These endorphins are naturally occurring morphine-like substances that create a feeling of bliss within us.

Routinely practicing kindness has additional health benefits to you as well.

A more optimistic and happier outlook on life
A heightened sense of well being
A sense of exhilaration and euphoria
An increase in energy
A feeling of being healthy
Decreased feelings of loneliness, depression and helplessness
A sense of connectedness with others
A greater sense of calmness and relaxation
Increased longevity
Better weight control
An improvement in insomnia
A stronger immune system
A reduction in pain
Increased body warmth
A healthier cardiovascular system (reduction of high blood pressure, improved circulation, reduced coronary disease)
A reduction of excessive stomach acid
A decrease of oxygen requirement
Relief from arthritis and asthma
Speedier recovery from surgery
Reduced cancer activity

I attended a conference the other day and this was brought up. I thought maybe others might find it good food for thought, too.

Feel free to share your own thoughts and experiences.

I would love to add a book suggestion to your wonderful topic.

It is called: The power of Kindness. The Unexpected Benefits of leading a Compassionate Life. By psychologist Piero Ferrucci.

It is such a wonderful book that speaks to the topics Pea-n-Me has posted.

Plus the book is written on is really neat feeling paper. (How books feel & the print type is a big deal for me!)

I have been trying to live with the idea that it is never wrong to be kind. Some days are easier then others but choosing kindness benefits all involved.

Peace.
Colleen

You know I totally agree with this....

If you just try and reach out to others, be kind even when it is hard sometimes, and not internalize things... maybe your personal life would be better. I try, it makes the days go by easier....if you live them with anger, well you are just plain miserable and it spills over to others..

Thanks for the good words this morning...a wonderful reminder of how we should all be living our lives.

Thanks for the great reminder. While my late husband was struggling with his asthma I found my "therapy" was helping others. It helped me to realize that others had it tougher than we did.
