Kindle with Special Offers $114 Available May 3rd

It's tempting. I just wish the Kindle allowed library lending. I would buy this version in a heartbeat if they did. I would gladly put up with sponsored screensavers and special offers if I could get a $25 discount. And some of the special offers look pretty good...pay $10 for a $20 Amazon.com gift card.

no way saving $25 to have to see adds everyday so not worth it to me. Honestly if they are going to be advertising then they should pay me to advertise to me.

$114??

Heck yeah! If I needed one, I'd snap one up in a heartbeat!

IDK, I would probably like some of the deals like the $10 for the $20 GC, but I would also not want to see ads all day. I could really go either way.

Yes, you can get the basic Kindle for $114 but...
instead of the 'author' portrait screensavers you get ads. Granted, you can tailor your ads, but they are ads nonetheless.
Is it worth saving $25 to you?
Nope. They would have to reduce the price of the kindle a LOT more than that for me to put up with ads.

I pre-ordered mine, so I guess my answer is yes. I figure the $10 for $20 gift card brings that down to $104. I don't stare at the screensavers, so it doesn't really bother me to have ads there. That way I'll have my new Kindle for summer use.:thumbsup2 Happy Mother's Day to me!

I received a Nook for Christmas and I love the library function, but the battery needs to be charged frequently. Recently DH has been reading on it so I figure I'll get the Kindle for me, so he can continue reading uninterrupted on the Nook.

It wouldn't be worth it for me. I'd rather pay a couple extra bucks to get them w/out. If the savings were greater, I'd totally do it. I cannot believe how much the prices have decreased. I remember when they were once $400. I thought I bought mine for a steaL Of $289. Now they're nicer and cheaper.

I will not pay someone else to advertise to me if I can avoid it (okay, I pay for cable TV, but I mute or change channels during most commercials). I have a Kindle, but if I were in need of another one for me or a family member, I would NOT buy one at the discount they are offering. I might consider it if the device were free and we only had to pay for the books, but even then I'd have to really think about it.

Do you leave it in wi-fi/3g mode? If you change it to airplane mode it drains your battery much, much slower. I use my Nook daily and have it set to airplane mode and only have to charge it every 4 weeks. I only turn on wifi mode when I want to download books. HTH!

I agree. At the current price point, I would rather pay the extra $25 for no ads. If it was a bigger savings, I might consider it for some of the special offers.

My co-worker has a 3G Nook and I have a Wifi only Kindle. Even with her 3G turned off she has to charge hers all the time compared to my Kindle. I don't leave the Wifi on all the time and I read about 30 minutes a day on average and I have only charged mine 2x since the initial charge at Christmas. She uses her Nook about the same and she charges hers every 2-3 weeks. I think part of it is the touch screen bar at the bottom on the nook.

That's true. The lcd screen will drain your battery quickly. If you have it set to stay on a long time or use it a lot.

If I didn't already own a Kindle I would take them up on this offer. I never even really look at my screensavers for more than a second at a time anyways and I really like the idea of the special offers.

When you take in the savings you get with the special offers it becomes an even better deal than the $25 off.

$20 GC for $10 - a savings of $10
6 audible books for $6 - a savings of $54 (assuming around $10 per book)
MP3 album for a $1 - a savings of $9 (assuming a $10 album)

Add this to the original $25 and you have the possibility of saving $98 (bringing the kindle down to $41) with just the special offers they used as an example. Who knows how much you could save after a year or so?

I really don't get why people are so bothered by screen saver ads. Who looks at the screen savers? :confused3 If the ads were displayed when you turned pages and then you had to wait 30 secs to see the next page I could understand.

What am I missing?

Do we really know how the ads will be pushed?

They're replacing the screen savers and there will be a small banner at the bottom of the home screen (similar to banners you see on websites)

From Amazon:

Special offers and sponsored screensavers display on the Kindle screensaver and on the bottom of the home screen—they don't interrupt reading.

Are you kidding?

You do know that if you turn off the wireless on your Kindle, you won't get the ads?

:confused3
No, I'm not kidding. I've had Kindles since they first came out so I know how tgey work, thanks.

I know it's hard for some on the budget board to understand, but some of us aren't out to pinch pennies at all costs. You're only saving $25 dollars- really not worth it. I get enough advertising in the rest of my life.

I think the whole thing is silly but it'll be interesting to see how many people get suckered into it.

Gosh, I didn't realize being a budget boarder makes me stupid. Oh, and a sucker too.:lmao:

I don't see what the big deal is. When I buy a TV I know I am going to be bombarded with ads. I just ignore them. And I don't expect to get a tv for free because I'm subjected to ads. Same with magazines.
