My son bought me a kindle for HIS birthday (he usually gives me flowers every year). He said with all I do for him (he and my grandson moved back here after the divorce and I babysit my grandson every day) I deserve this so I don't have to keep taking trips to the library. But I am having trouble hooking it up.
I kept having trouble getting it on wifi but finally did. then I tried to register with Amazon and can't get it to register. I went on line and checked to make sure the email and password are the same and they are but every time I put it in I get the same message "unable to connect at this time. Please make sure you are within wireless range and try again, if the problem persoists, please restart your Kindle from the menue in Settings and try again"
I still have the wifi symbol up at the top so I know I am connected and I have gone to the menu and settings 4 times and keep getting the same thing.
does anyone have any idea what I can do?
also, I was reading the Kindle User's guide this morning but now it won't open. I click on it from the home area and the screen is blank. I was hoping I could find the answers by reading the guide again and I can't get it to open.
I am frustrated already and want to just return it and go to the library.

Go to Amazon support on your computer; you can click on "call me". Somebody will call you and walk you through it.

This is why I'm glad DBF bought me the Nook, we had problems with it and took it back to a store (not the one he bought it at, the one closest to our house) and the manager helped us figure out what the issue was. We were getting similar error messages as you OP, it turned out the problem was with the software not my Nook, it took a while for the software people to figure it out and get it fixed but eventually it worked out fine. I hope you have the same good luck with someone over the phone. :)

It's a 40 minute drive for me to get to a Barnes and Noble store and then I'd be talking to a Bookstore Manager, not a device technical support person.

I'd much rather hit a Call Me button on the Amazon page and get a call back in under 2 minutes.

Amazon's kindle customer service is great. When I had problem with mine charging, they overnighted me a brand new kindle, literally had it the next day. Love them!

Since you mentioned you use your library a lot, just so you know the Kindle doesn't let you download books from your library. As far as I know the only ones that do are the Nook and Sony. If you plan to buy your books from Amazon its not an issue.

I just bought my DD14 a Nook yesterday, and my local B&N has a 'class' every Thursday night as a 'how to use your Nook" and to help with any issues. I thought it was a great idea that they have that! :thumbsup2

Call Amazon Kindle Support - 1-866-321-8851 (this is different than the regular Amazon Customer Support). I also had a problem setting up my Kindle & they walked me through it. Good luck - I love my Kindle!

I agree with the other posters about calling customer support. They are fantastic and should have you set up quickly.

Also, be sure to check out the free Kindle books on Amazon. I have over 100 free books waiting to be read at the moment. :)

Thanks everyon efor the replies.
I got on the phone last night with Amazon support and they walked me through everything.
They asked what version I had and then upgraded me to the highest version, 3.0.2 for free.
they also hooked me up from their site and right away my kindle said "Margaret's Kindle" It was so cool.
I did get on and "buy" 15 free books from amazon and will start reading them soon. I still have 2 books from the library that are due on the 20th that I want to finish first then bring back.
I will look into what my library has to offer too, I didn't know you could get books from them, thanks for the information.

Good! I'm glad it worked out well for you. All the free books available for the Kindle are a great bonus.

My closest B&N is 15 minutes away, again, that's me not you. Clearly if I didn't have a B&N close DBF would have considered the Kindle more. The Nook has a customer support line too, unfortunately the problem we were having could not be seen by the Nook tech support technician, we tried that twice before we took it to the store and in fact they suggested we go back to the store and exchange it. The Bookstore Manager was MUCH more helpful then the tech support people we spoke to, the manager was able to SEE the issue we were having and was able to speak with the tech's supervisor to explain the problem, which resulted in them figuring out it was a software issue that needed to be fixed and not simply an issue with the Nook we had in hand. So, I still say I'd prefer a Nook just for the support we received from the Bookstore Manager, in fact he's the reason we kept the Nook and didn't just return it and go for the Kindle instead.
Altho it would be nice to have a button to press and have them call you back. That's one feature the Nook doesn't have. :)

that's GREAT that they helped you out! :) My Nook is named too, it's nookalicious. LOL :) Yes I picked it. ;) I get the free software upgrades as well, it's really neat to turn on your device and get a "software upgrade" message. :) Be aware that I'm pretty sure that the Kindle does not work with libraries and borrowing books, I'm pretty sure only the Sony & the Nook have that option. That was another reason DBF got me the Nook, he knows how much I like library books. :) Enjoy your Kindle!!
