Kindle Touch, with or without special offers?

DH and I are getting his parents each a basic Kindle or Kindle Touch for Christmas, but we are seeing them on 12/22 this year to celebrate. My darling DH has waited until the last minute (naturally) and I'm starting to think we would be better off buying in Best Buy or Target. That way if they have issues, they can go into a store for help. But it seems they only have the Kindle with special offers. How bad/annoying are the ads? Would we be better off buying direct from Amazon to get the one without offers, and paying shipping?

I just got a Kindle touch and the ads are not a problem at all. They appear as your screen saver and at the bottom of your home page. Don't even really notice them. Glad I got the more inexpensive Kindle.

I agree! Go less expensive! And, from what I've heard - the offers are sometimes for great accessories for the kindle!

get special offers, their cheaper, and now instead of john steinbeck staring at me there are ads, sometimes really good deals that you might be interested in

The ads definitely do NOT pop up as you are reading the book.

They are not a bother at all. And you might find some good deals ... they have had quite a few I've taken advantage of like ... like spend $10 and get $5 off.

Touch is easier for someone not technically-inclined ... but even the basic is pretty easy to figure out.

And to make you feel even better about your decision... if your inlaws do find the ads too annoying, they can opt out. It would mean paying the difference between the ad supported and non ad kindle, but Amazon does offer that flexibility.

Does anyone know if you link more than one special offers Kindle to the same account can both Kindles take advantage of their special offers? For example, if 2 special offers Kindles both get an offer for a discounted gift card, can they both buy it?

Unfortunately, no. All kindles registered to one account get the same code.

Some people set up an extra Amazon account and when a good offer comes along they deregister from their shared account, register to their backup acoount, claim the offer, then switch back. A bit of a pain, but it works.

I've been wanting a Kindle so have done some research and lots of looking. At first I thought it would be neat to have the Fire because of it's extra capabilities. After looking at the Fire and the Touch I've decided to go with the Touch. My reason for wanting one is for reading and the e-ink on the Touch is so much easier on the eyes. I can always go to my computeer for e-mail and games. I suppose it really depends on what you intend to spend most of your time doing with the Kindle. They seem to have their bases covered and there's something for everyone at lots of different price points.

My sentiments exactly and I am saving up for my Touch (trying to set a good example for my DS and be responsible, LOL). I hope that there will be some gift card deal or incentive after the holidays, but I already cashed in some points for an Amazon gift card and can also use my Discover rewards cash for it, so I am almost halfway there.

Also I figured, if I get the Fire, my kids will be haranguing me to play Angry Birds (DS) or Dr. Seuss (DD) and I will never get to read on it! I'll probably get a smartphone after I get a teaching job anyway, and then it will be duplicative.

It's a fairly recent change. If you go to "manage your devices" on your kindle account there's a "special offers" tab and you can choose to subscribe or unsubscribe right there.
