And I think you can email your Word doc and have it sent to your Kindle, but I'm not sure of the details, either. Look around in your manual that came loaded on the Kindle.
And welcome to the wonderful world of owning a Kindle!!!
thank you both. i did read that i can email it to my kindle email address but there is a fee for that. it's not much, but why pay if i can figure it out for free.
is it weird that i have the urge to hug and kiss my kindle?
If the word Doc is free of fancy formatting just open it up in Word, Save it as a plain TXT file and then move it over to the Kindle with your USB cord. If you want to preserve italics and such it is best to convert it.
As for having Amazon convert the documents, the conversion itself is always free. The cost involved comes into play in whether or not you want to send the document to your Kindle via whispernet. If so, then there is a small fee.
If you email it to your "free" Kindle account <username>@free.kindle.com and have them email the converted file back to you, you can then move it over to your Kindle via the USB cable and there will be no charge.
thanks, i did all that, but it's not showing up on my home page... so, i went ahead and emailed it direct, it won't cost much and i'm really interested to see how it'll work. well.... if it does work....

I get an email from thekindlewarehouse.com, it's either weekly or monthly. They have a tips and tricks section. Oh, and another way to search for free kindle books (besides lurking on the monthly threads on the kindleboards and the big deals on kindle page at amazon) is to search for '-domain' in the search bar on Amazon.com with the search drop-down menu set to 'Kindle Store'. This will pull up free books, although occasionally books that were free but no longer are will show up also.
When you email it to the <username>@free.kindle.com account you will receive an email back in a couple of minutes with the converted file attached.
Plug your Kindle into your computer with the USB cable and then open that email. There will be an attachment there. When the computer asks what you want to do with the attachment select "Save" and then save it to the Kindle under the Documents folder.
Then eject the Kindle and look, it should be listed as a new file. If you don't see it listed ... then look at the top of your Kindle Screen and make sure it says "Display All Items." If it doesn't say that move your cursor up there and change it.
If you are going to do a bunch of file conversions you will most likely want to get a file management tool such as calibre to correct all the metadata info. Whenever you convert documents using Amazon your email address gets listed as the author etc etc. calibre can correct all that and help you keep the files organized.
FYI, there's an update that's supposed to be downloading today and onward. It now enables my K2 to have screen rotation like the DX, and apparently it changes the PDF feature also. I had to manually download mine, but it didn't take too long.
