If you're going to be replacing a tablet, you will probably want to get one of the Kindle Fires. Which kind you should get depends on what your main use for it will be. I have a Kindle Fire HD, 3rd Gen. I use it mainly for reading, but also some gaming, and some social media. IT doesn't have cameras, or many bells and whistles. DH has a Kindle Fire HDX. He uses it mainly for surfing the internet, You Tube videos, gaming, and occasional reading. Mine is thicker, heavier, and quite a bit slower than his, but it fits my needs. On the few occasions he has used mine (like when his is charging) he sees a noticeable difference in the points I mentioned. So, if you will be using it for the internet, I would suggest going with HDX!
Also, the ads are not at all intrusive. I have my a PIN entry on my mine, in case I lose it someone takes it, and the ad is on the page where I enter the code. There are also occasional banners at the bottom of the main page, as well as on the games I play (freebie games). I don't find them bothersome, and have used them a few times when the offers were good!
One more thing to be aware of: when you order a Kindle from the website, you have the option of having
Amazon register it for you. This means they will enter your name and account information into it so you can basically take it out of the box and go. I choose the This Is A Gift option so they don't enter any info, because I have read that some folks got an empty box when the delivery arrived, and whoever took it had already racked up lots of charges on it!

It's easy to set up on your own, and saves lots of possible headaches.
