What's the big difference and which would you buy?

I'm technically challenged- this is for my husband's Christmas present.

I have the Kindle 2 with the whisper net connection, equivalent to the $189 model now. I would absolutely get this version. TO me the ability to turn on the wifi and connect to the bookstore is well worth the extra $50. There are no monthly charges and they are expanding what is available online all the time.

Do make sure you get a sturdy cover as the screen are a bit delicate.

I just got mine last week. i spent $139 on it, and it connects through wireless internet as well. But, I think the more expensive version can connect through the 3G network, and therefore doesn't need to be in a wifi area. Not a big deal to me. I download what I want at home anyway.

Thank you guys! I think I will get the 189- sometimes my dh has to travel for work and they don't always have the best accomodations!

Even in Tibet I was able to download books. You are making the right choice to spend the extra $50.
