DD11 wants one for Xmas, I don't know anything about either. Any help please????:goodvibes She probably won't be reading books on it, aren't they kind of like a tablet??? So confused.

I have the Nook Simple Touch and love it, but it is a dedicated ereader only. The nook HD is a tablet. My mom just got one and really likes it a lot. It uses the Google Play store to buy apps. You can probably find a good deal on it. Its a pretty good tablet for an inexpensive price.

I like Nooks a little better. Both my Dad and my boyfriend have had them for like 2 years and they're alwaysss on them, haha. My dad uses his alll the time for reading, internet, anything! lol

The Nook hardware is marginally better but I prefer Amazon's content system by a landslide, especially if you're a Prime member.

There are dedicated reader versions and tablet-like versions of each.

I have had a kindle for over a year. I got a Kindle Fire a few months before the latest version came out. I think the newer one has a camera, so it would be more useful if your daughter doesn't want it for books. I also have some music on mine. the larger screen makes it easier to give the commands you want.

We have both. I use the nook more, but my wife and kids use kindles. I like the nook ergonomics and book format better. There is more support, I can get library books, I can get harder to find books.

The kindle can run anything from the google play store, but if it isn't on the amazon store you have to side load it.

At this point though if I was buying just one, I would go kindle fire with no hesitation. Better sales and prices on books, its android tablet so can run any android program on it, and I have concerns about B&N going out of business. Plus with Prime and native streaming it would be more useful.

OP has stated her daughter isn't interested in reading books on a tablet.

OP, if this is true, why consider either a Nook or a Kindle? I'd go for a full fledged tablet, such as an iPad.

I have a Kindle (keyboard) that I love, but I needed a tablet to travel with and I picked the nook HD over the Kindle because of the option of expandable memory. I do not use my Kindle anymore, I use the nook HD with the Kindle app.
If she doesn't want to read on it, why doesn't she just want a tablet?

I'd go with a regular tablet. It was just announced the iPad Mini price is dropping to $299 (not the newest version with retinal display). This would be great for an 11 year old.

If she isn't reading books on it, don't get an ereader, get a tablet. Ereaders are optimized for BOOKS. Both the higher end Kindles and the Nook will function as a bad andriod tablets, but a good android tablet will be cheaper.

Well, she has a desktop computer in her room, not a laptop. so i think she wanted it to be "mobile". So she mentioned a kindle or nook because her cousin has one, and I know they are cheaper then a tablet. i think an IPAD is alot more than the other.

I am gonna look into the IPAD mini or the Nook HD. Looks like a good option. DH is the computer expert, gonna put him to work researching. :thumbsup2 Thanks everyone.

I have the nook HD plus and the kindle fire. I don't use my fire much any more, just because is is much slower for game playing.

I think that if she isn't going to read books you shouldn't get an ereader. Seems kind of silly to me. But if you get one go get a Nook HD + now because they are on sale for 119.

I just bought an ipad mini refurb from apple.com for $249. My 8 yo granddaughter will be so happy.

iPads are expensive, but they run iOS. A Kindle or Nook will be an Android device and run Android games. When comparing them, compare them to Android tablets. Be aware that last I checked, Kindle and Nooks were locked down.

You can get an Android tablet for less than $100.

Hubby & I have Kindle Paper Whites. We LOVE them!! Our Boys 14 & 11 have Kindle Touches but will be upgrading to the Paper Whites soon. We each have a few games on them but mostly use them for reading. I love that books are bought thru Amazon. Also our public library has a ton of books to borrow!

DS 14 has a Samsung 7' tablet. He loves it. Mostly uses it for Youtube, Face book that kind of stuff. I think it was about $200

I got a Microsoft Surface tablet over the Summer. I have a laptop as well but I wanted something more mobil as well. I mostly use it for email, Facebook, Pinterest (basically when I sit on the couch & waste time;)) I paid $350 for it. For another $100 you can buy a keyboard. I decided not to get that right away. Glad I saved the $100 bucks b/c I prefer the touch screen.

My husband just bought a Google tablet this week for around $99. It has a camera, unlike a Nook (at least I am pretty sure they don't have one). So far he is pretty impressed with it :thumbsup2
