The one thing I can say, as a faithful Kindle user, is that the Nook MAY be great, but no one knows yet, since none are out in the public's hands yet. I would wait, if that's the one you're interested in, until you learn more from the "hands on" folks. I can say that
Amazon customer service has been just SUPER, which is important to me when it comes to electronics.
I am also a faithful Kindle user, and I agree that Amazon customer service has been great -- I had a few little bumps in the road setting up my account at first, and they helped me.
However, as much as I love Kindle, I'm hearing good things about Nook. With its debut being so soon, if I were in your Kindle-less shoes, I would wait and see BOTH before I made this expensive purchase.
I usually buy books from the flea market or garage sales, or check out from the library. I don't buy alot of new books. My preferences are mysteries, romance, historical fiction and non fiction-primarily biographies and history . . . I have purchaed ALOT of free or very inexpensive books (like under $2) I check on Amazon every couple of days, and download these books. Even if I think it may not be one I'm really interested in, I download it anyway. I figure I don't have to keep it on my Kindle, it can stay in my Amazon library.
You've described my taste in reading material, and those are the big categories that are CURRENTLY AVAILABLE in Kindle format. Others are sure to follow, but right now those of us who share these tastes have plenty from which to choose.
I have been pleasantly surprised that so many FREE books are available in Kindle format. Some of them are old classics -- Jane Eyre, Pride and Prejudice -- that I was pleased to pick up for free. Others are from new authors hoping that if they give you one book, you'll become a paying customer. I've noticed that new books tend to crop up around the first of the month, and they don't necessarily stay free forever; thus, it's wise to go ahead and download them. I have a backlog of books waiting for me, but that's fine.
They both look SO cool! I would love to have one or the other, but I just don't know if I can justify the $259 for one, when I can just go to the library and check out a book for free. I also just bought a bunch of good books (many of which have been bestsellers/book club picks in the past year) for a mere 50 cents each. Cool or cheap? Hmmm...could be good for homeschooling, though. Hmmm....
I thought these same things. I also worried about not being able to share books with friends/family. And I worried about taking it out to the pool/beach and being able to leave it unattended while I get into the water. These are all legitimate concerns. However, for me, the positives outweigh these negatives. Things I love:
I've never in my whole life had enough bookshelves to contain my books. I've had my Kindle since Mother's Day, and I have stored 79 books in the space of a small magazine. Space and furniture (and the need to maintain them) are money too.
Something no one's mentioned: Your books are stored at Amazon.com. If you should lose or destroy your Kindle, your books are still stored at Amazon.com. You could buy a new machine and transfer all those purchases to that new machine.
We travel frequently, and I LOVE the ability to carry LOADS of books with me.
The Kindle is lightweight to hold and easy on the eyes as you read.
One more thing no one's said yet: Go ahead and buy a cover for your expensive new toy right away. I was
very worried about dropping mine until I purchased a slide-on condom-type cover (it's made of grippy rubber, which makes me feel like it's not going to slip out of my hands). I also have a clear protective cover over the screen, a decorative sticker from DecalGirl (though that's more decorative than functional), and a quilted fabric case to hold the whole thing (and its cord). I
don't want to have an accident with it!
