I have heard several positive things about the Kindle, but I'm wondering if anyone is familiar with the Nook from barnes and Noble. Any info that you could share would be greatly appreciated! TIA!!

The one thing I can say, as a faithful Kindle user, is that the Nook MAY be great, but no one knows yet, since none are out in the public's hands yet. I would wait, if that's the one you're interested in, until you learn more from the "hands on" folks. I can say that Amazon customer service has been just SUPER, which is important to me when it comes to electronics.

I don't think anyone has the nook yet, I stopped by my Barnes and Noble yesterday and they didn't even have a display model to play with. It'll be interesting to see what the differences are when people actually have them in their hands and can compare the two.

I have a Sony E-Reader and LOVE LOVE LOVE it! Just throwing out another option for you. :)

ME TOO!!! Love my Sony e-Reader. Yeah, you have to sync with computer and can not buy a book on the 'fly', but I always think ahead and download books that I am interested in reading so I always have a few there when I need them. I have mine for almost 3 years and have had no issues. I would love to get the newer larger screen version, but until this one dies-or I get a job-I am fine with it. Love it!!!

Just a couple of comments/thoughts....

I usually buy books from the flea market or garage sales, or check out from the library. I don't buy alot of new books. My preferences are mysteries, romance, historical fiction and non fiction-primarily biographies and history.

I had a Sony ebook reader (it was stolen). I liked it because I could downlaod books from the library and read them. Downside...not too many books are really available through the library. You have to use your computer to downlaod books, which for me wasn't usually a problem. You just have to plan ahead.

I bought a used Kindle this summer (original). Now that I've had it almost 6 months, I discovered a few things. I have purchaed ALOT of free or very inexpensive books (like under $2) I check on Amazon every couple of days, and download these books. Even if I think it may not be one I'm really interested in, I download it anyway. I figure I don't have to keep it on my Kindle, it can stay in my Amazon library.

While I do use my Kindle around town ( I bring it when I pick up kids from sports, etc) I really love it for when I travel. My carryon has gotten SO small....I used to carry 3-4 books in my carryon to fly across the country. I also do alot of day and weekend trips with dd, and it comes in very handy for that.

I also really like that I could downlaod a book immediately, if I wanted to. (I don't very often) What I don't like is that you cna't see the cost on the Kindle (but you can when you order off the computer). So I look on the compuetr every couple of days for free books, but may not actually download to the Kindle but every week or so.

I am curious what the one from B and N will look like. Depending on the price, I would probbaly consider buying that one, also, if they offered alot of deals on books.

I am so glad I purchased one.

One major problem I see is that apparently B&N isn't going to allow gift cards to be used, to purchase books for the Nook.

We have four Kindle's and two iPod Touches on one account. For Christmas, we give Amazon gift cards to each other and we all share the same books.

You've stumped me! I can't figure out a way to use a GC for the Kindle books. As far as I can tell you have to use 1-click, and that can't be set up with a GC.

If I've missed this, I'm going to be so embarrassed. Hubby and I met in amazon customer service, and he works for a very very relevant department, to this conversation, at amazon now....

I am very seriously considering getting a Kindle for Christmas. I have always been a big book person, and part of my reluctance to getting it (besides the high price) has been that I can't hold it in my hand to try before I buy. No one I know has one. Is there any way to check one out in person, any place that has them for testing?

I absolutely LOVE my Kindle. I got it as a mothers day gift and hardly put it down for months. It's great to travel with, there are a million book choices in every price range, download is super quick and yes, I had no problem using an Amazon Gift Card.

To use the gift card you just have to go to the redeem gift card area and do as instructed. The gc is now registered. When you purchase books with 1 click it will subtract from you gc total. All of it does not have to be used at once. Good luck!

Are you serious? Augh.

But...that's also really weird. Interesting.

Eh, hubby just tests 'em, so it's OK that he doesn't know...but I should have been able to figure that out! Thanks!

I have Kindle for i-phone and I love love love it! There is some sort of Barnes and Noble app that I think is simular to what the Nook will be. The problem I had with the B&N is the price of the books. Kindle was way cheeper, with lots of free and really low priced books. Most new releases are $9.99 but I rarely buy those.

There is a SEE A KINDLE IN YOUR AREA link on Amazon in the Kindle info. Im not sure how that works but it's worth a shot

I don't know if this is accurate, but I was asking at B&N about the Nook. The clerk told me that since B&N has it's own publishing co there would be lots more books available for the Nook and many of them free. Don't know if she was just selling or telling the truth. I too am interested in finding out more about the Nook and comparing to Kindle...would like to buy one fairly soon but I don't want to rush in.

They both look SO cool! I would love to have one or the other, but I just don't know if I can justify the $259 for one, when I can just go to the library and check out a book for free. I also just bought a bunch of good books (many of which have been bestsellers/book club picks in the past year) for a mere 50 cents each. Cool or cheap? Hmmm...could be good for homeschooling, though. Hmmm....

I just wanted to add that I LOVE my kindle. It is one of the best gadgets I have ever bought~worth every penny!!!

I'm like the OP and wonder if I'd like one since I so enjoy the tactile part of reading..the paper, the pages, etc. How do you all feel about this? Do you miss the book part of the 'book'?
My biggest dilemma besides that, is that I work part time at an entertainment store (Hastings) and we get a free paperback a week...I've been there 9 years and you can imagine my book supply. So, I feel guilty actually buying books when I have tons waiting to be read. :)

I am also a faithful Kindle user, and I agree that Amazon customer service has been great -- I had a few little bumps in the road setting up my account at first, and they helped me.

However, as much as I love Kindle, I'm hearing good things about Nook. With its debut being so soon, if I were in your Kindle-less shoes, I would wait and see BOTH before I made this expensive purchase.

You've described my taste in reading material, and those are the big categories that are CURRENTLY AVAILABLE in Kindle format. Others are sure to follow, but right now those of us who share these tastes have plenty from which to choose.

I have been pleasantly surprised that so many FREE books are available in Kindle format. Some of them are old classics -- Jane Eyre, Pride and Prejudice -- that I was pleased to pick up for free. Others are from new authors hoping that if they give you one book, you'll become a paying customer. I've noticed that new books tend to crop up around the first of the month, and they don't necessarily stay free forever; thus, it's wise to go ahead and download them. I have a backlog of books waiting for me, but that's fine.

I thought these same things. I also worried about not being able to share books with friends/family. And I worried about taking it out to the pool/beach and being able to leave it unattended while I get into the water. These are all legitimate concerns. However, for me, the positives outweigh these negatives. Things I love:

I've never in my whole life had enough bookshelves to contain my books. I've had my Kindle since Mother's Day, and I have stored 79 books in the space of a small magazine. Space and furniture (and the need to maintain them) are money too.

Something no one's mentioned: Your books are stored at Amazon.com. If you should lose or destroy your Kindle, your books are still stored at Amazon.com. You could buy a new machine and transfer all those purchases to that new machine.

We travel frequently, and I LOVE the ability to carry LOADS of books with me.

The Kindle is lightweight to hold and easy on the eyes as you read.

One more thing no one's said yet: Go ahead and buy a cover for your expensive new toy right away. I was very worried about dropping mine until I purchased a slide-on condom-type cover (it's made of grippy rubber, which makes me feel like it's not going to slip out of my hands). I also have a clear protective cover over the screen, a decorative sticker from DecalGirl (though that's more decorative than functional), and a quilted fabric case to hold the whole thing (and its cord). I don't want to have an accident with it!

I looked at the Nook yesterday...I have a Kindle and LOVE IT!. I asked the girl about odering books on the Nook. She said the color bar at the bottom has different books, so I asked" what if a book I want is not at the bottom, my Kindle has a keybord on it so I can search" She told me that I would have to go on Barnes and Noble.com on my computer to find it. That to me is a dealbreaker. I LOVE the fact that I really never have to use my computer for anything with my Kindle. :surfweb:
