My Fiancé and I both have Kindles. They're super easy to set up and use! We both have the grey one. I like the way it reads a little better than the white (I think both are at Target if you want to check them out.) Really the big decision is whether to get it wi-fi only or wifi & 3g. I have the wi-fi only version, so I can only download books when I have that internet signal. So at home, at a hotel, etc. My fiancé has the 3g version. So if we were in a hotel with paid internet and we didn't want to pay for internet to just download a book, he could do it, and I couldn't. If your husband commutes and reads on his commute, the 3g would come in handy.
Then it's a matter of the kind of case you want. It doesn't need a case, but if you think he'll travel with it at all, then it's better to have a case to protect it. I have a pretty case, my fiancé has the standard
Amazon case with a book light. (I have a clip-on book light.) I think for a guy, the standard Amazon case is the way to go. If he reads a lot in bed (when you're trying to sleep!) go for the book light version.
Personally, I love my Kindle. I go through books very very quickly. (Free books here:
http://inkmesh.com/free-ebooks/?site=kindle ) On our Disney vacation last month I took my Kindle with me and read 3-4 books during vacation (I was there the week before for work.) So it was nice to take the weight of 1 book instead of 5 that I would normally take (more room for souvenirs!!)
Some people will say the Nook is better, or the Sony eReader, or the iPad. Personally we looked at all of them and we liked the Kindle the best. Found it the easiest to read on, etc. You can find all of them in a store now to check out, and if you're on the fence on which item to buy, go check them out. For what it's worth, you can access the internet on the Kindle, but it's very basic. I didn't get it to browse the internet, I got it to read. The biggest advantage to something like the iPad is that it has more than 1 function, but it's going to have a glare where the Kindle does not. If you have any questions, I'd be happy to help! My fiancé is technology inclined, so he can help me with any technical questions
