Amazon announced today they are working with Overdrive to make library books available on the Kindle later this year.

Interesting. They will have additional features like being able to make margin notes and retaining those notes if you ever borrow the book again OR if you buy it. Plus you'll be able to synch your reading across all your Kindle devices. Not that I read anywhere other than the iPad or the Kindle... but sweet!

Amazon to launch library lending for Kindle books
By Nancy Blair, USA TODAY

The world of Kindle reading soon will get bigger: Amazon today said that later this year it will launch library lending for Kindle books, from over 11,000 libraries in the U.S.

The Kindle Library Lending feature will be available for all Kindles and Kindle apps, Amazon said. The company did not give a more specific time frame for launch of the service.

You'll be able to check out a Kindle book from a local library and start reading on any Kindle device or Kindle app. If a Kindle book is checked out again or that book is purchased from Amazon, annotations and bookmarks will be preserved, Amazon said in a news release.

Kindle has free reading apps for a range of devices including Android, iPad, iPod touch, iPhone, PC, Mac, BlackBerry and Windows Phone.

"We're doing a little something extra here," Jay Marine, Amazon's Kindle director, said in a statement. "Normally, making margin notes in library books is a big no-no. But we're extending our Whispersync technology so that you can highlight and add margin notes to Kindle books you check out from your local library.

Your notes will not show up when the next patron checks out the book. But if you check out the book again, or subsequently buy it, your notes will be there as you left them.

I am extremely excited about this!!!!

I just ran out at lunch and joined the library down the street from where I work. The library system in this county participates in Overdrive for eBooks so I wanted to get in the system before this goes live later this year. I live in a neighboring county and our library system currently only has OverDrive for audio books. Luckily both libraries are part of AccessPA so it was a breeze to join!

It's about time! I use overdrive on my iphone to get library ebooks now and love it! Can't wait for the kindle to have it, so i can read on a bigger screen. :)

This makes the Kindle a perfect device. I already get library books on mine, but it'll be nice to not have to do it "illegally" by stripping DRM.

About time Amazon!!;)

woo hoo! I wanted a Kindle for Xmas last year but almost decided against it due to the "library" issue. I suspected that Kindle would hop on that band wagon eventually, so I went ahead and got one. Looks like I was right! Yay! :yay:

As a library worker, I can say, its about time Amazon.

Seriously, Amazon must have lost thousands of Kindle sales just through our library branch alone. The number one question we get is related to e-readers, "If I buy a Kindle, can I download e-books from your library district's website?"

Librarian: "No. But here is a sheet that lists other e-readers that will download books from our website."

Based from patron feedback, sales of Barnes and Noble Nook e-readers seem to walloping Amazon Kindles in our area.

Exactly... that's why I didn't even bother with Kindle in the first place and I don't understand why they didn't want to put that capability on it (other than greed). I figure Nook looks better and can do library books for the same price... :)
Now that Kindle finally woke up, I might have to get one for DH for christmas or something.... :thumbsup2

Thanks for posting this. I can't wait it was the one thing that I liked about the Nook that the Kindle didn't offer.

There should be some interesting reading over on the Kindle forum at amazon.

Yea! I've been thinking I'd like the Kindle more but I keep going back to the borrowing from the library features of the Nook...This really changes thing up

I am glad to hear that Kindle is finally jumping on the library book bandwagon. I bought a Nook last year and love it. Especially the library lending feature. My library allows me to check out up to 10 ebooks at a time for up to 3 weeks. This all varies according to your library system though.

Since you have a library card with the Access PA sticker on it from a Pennsylvania library you can also join the Free Library of Philadelphia for free. They apparently have a huge selection of Overdrive ebooks. Anybody can join the Free Lib of Philly. But it costs $15 if you don't fall into the following categories.

"A Free Library card is available at no cost to anyone who lives, works, pays taxes, or goes to school in the City of Philadelphia. In addition, anyone who is 65 or older or who has a valid card with an Access PA sticker from another Pennsylvania library can obtain a Free Library card without charge. Veterans and members of the Armed Services can also obtain a Free Library card without charge".

I wish I had signed up for a membership before I moved out of PA.lol.

Awesome! I will have to look into it!

Awesome! DH got one for his bday from his mom but since he doesn't read much, I'll take advantage of it. Hoping they make the change soon!

Thank you! Can't believe I didn't know this! I just signed up for a card...

Now I need someone to convince me to get/ask for a Kindle.....(my bday is next week....:rolleyes1)

Will we be able to 'check out' new releases?

I will preface my post with "I LOVE FLoP".
Now, that being said there are lots of people on FLoP acct. Which means that new releases have huge waiting list.
If you are one of those peoples who just can't wait to read the new stuffs elibrary is not for you.
I generally keep a 10 book waitlist at all times. I have never ran out of things to read as of yet between the 2 elibrary accounts I have.

So yeah, you can "check out" new releases but you will have to wait awhile on it most of the times. Unless you check their website everyday to catch the release when it first comes out (preorder waitlist kinda thing).

Another question...

Will we have access to all of the existing ebooks available at the libraries or only 'Kindle' books? In other words will the libraries now have to purchase the kindle version of the ebooks....

Make sense?
