Long story short due to a price error at Target I got a Kindle Fire for 123. Amazing deal! HOWEVER I already have an iphone so I am not going to pay another data charge to run this device. My main purpose WAS for an ereader but I don't read THAT much - maybe 30 minutes a day if I am lucky. I would like though to surf the net on it etc as my iphone isn't so hot for that.

That being said would I be NUTS to return the FIRE after paying 123 for it?

Well, one part of your post is moot - the Kindle Fire doesn't have an option for 3G service so there is no data charge to run the device. You can only access the web when you are in range of a wifi connection. If you have wireless at home you can do everything, but out in the wild, so to speak, you'll need to find wifi in order to surf the web, check your email, etc.

But for that price I would certainly keep it. You could sell it for a profit or keep it as a tablet and ereader. Be aware of course that it is not a traditional eink reader like The Kindle 3G - you'll be reading from a backlit screen instead of the Pearl eink one on a traditional Kindle. But I have found that changing the background color from white to sepia and dimming the brightness a little helps me read for several hours on the Fire with no problems.

Congrats on the great deal!!!

There is NO data plan for a Kindle Fire or Kindle 3g touch.

Kindle Fire you'll need wireless access.

Thanks guys! TON of help, thank you! I pride myself on my research and the kindle 3g keyboard was my initial winner. Then the Target price issue happened and I ended up with the FIRE. I did not understand that at all about no data plan. That makes me feel better yet. I initially set out for an ereader but in all honesty I don't read as much as I use to. Kids, dog, etc. Everything else gets my time! I felt a little guilty even getting an ereader thinking how much time do I REALLY read anyway? I find a lot of wasted time though at bus stops, doctor apts, etc. so felt the ereader would help out there. So in a weird way the FIRE always seems like a better DEAL in terms of usage I would have on a device - ie. not just an ereader..

You guys made me feel better about my purchase. I had just gotten an iphone last month and was kicking myself over the thought of a double data plan. Feel better now!! Not even possible to have it..
Thannks! melissa

go to ereaderiq and load up on tons of free books -

also I have read and learned a lot about fire from the amazon discussion board - I would go with Amazon Prime trial for 1 month to see how getting those videos, and tv shows - not to mention the "borrow" a book a month with the Prime membership would work for you!

and yes, I have a kindle keyboard (no 3 g we have wifi, and love it!) but we are now seriously considering The Fire - so , I'm jealous!!

Sandy, I love my new Fire! If you get one I think you'll be very happy. I am a Prime member and I spent all weekend watching movies for free! Then I bought Season One of The Office for 8.99. I think the Fire is a great new addition to the electronics I have.

OP here. You guys are awesome. I have gotten a great education! :) I am prime for free thru April on Amazon Mom so wasn't even thinking about that aspect of it either. I can't go wrong keeping this kindle. It was kind of a hoopla to get it at 123 and when I toyed with returning it DD12 thought I was INSANE and to think about it. (I was thinking I needed a 3g fee to get the most benefit from it). Am loving the options I can do with it! Book borrowig via prime??? Office for 8.99??? Good deals!!!

Some others in another thread mentioned getting special offers with the kidle special offer device. Are there special offers here on fIRE?

AND - biq question - what Vera Bradley case fits it best????????
Thank you!

No idea about Vera Bradley - I use either the M-Edge covers (my favorites!) or the Amazon covers.

Sorry, no special offers on the Fire. There are Special Offers options for the eink Kindles, though.

Vera Bradley has an "e-reader" case that will fit it. My dd is getting the Fire for Christmas and I sneakily took her to VB to help "me" pick out a case for my Kindle...but it's really for her. There were several patterns to choose from in that size. GL!

Thanks Dis-Happy! do you think this would work? I ordered a clear acrylic protector for the FIRE - if I had that on do you think it would still fit in the VB? Clear protector was more for drops or bumps but I want a pretty case for storing etc. Thanks for the help!

Should work. I have a cover on my ipad but it all fits in the VB case for tablets (the next size up from the e-reader). The overall dimensions leave a little wiggle room. Have fun!
