Kindle e-ink or paperwhite?

Looking to purchase a new kindle (have the 2nd generation). I'm having a real hard time reading my current kindle do to the dark screen. Is the e-ink the same way? The paperwhite seems the way to go, but not sure. Any thoughts?

I have the older version.. I like it a lot. Do you enlarge your font size when you have trouble reading?

If I were to buy again, I'd likely look at the paperwhite so I could read in the dark, but I want one that has the push buttons for turning pages not by swiping the screen. I'm not sure those come that way. You can read one-handed with buttons, but not when you to swipe. Keep that in mind.

I LOVE my paperwhite! I do most of my reading at night while hubby is sleeping. It's nice to not have to mess with a book light.

I went with the Paperwhite because of the back lighting and the ability to read in the dark and not disturb anyone. I'm fairly certain the e-ink is pretty much the same as the old one (maybe better quality, but no reading in the dark).

They do have lighted covers, but by the time you buy one of those, you're basically paying the same price as the Paperwhite.

The paperwhite has no buttons like a pp mentioned, but you don't have to swipe to turn pages, just touch the screen. (Occasionally, like to unlock, you have to swipe, but not in any particular place).

I love my Paperwhite! So nice to not have to worry about bringing a book light.
I enlarged my font (my Boys call it old lady font ) so when I lay down in bed I don't have to wear my glasses.

OK, tell me how this works. I take it, you touch the page it goes forward a page. How do you go backward? Does it ever move forward more than one page at the touch?

I love my Paperwhite. It is great any time of day, and I had no issues when using it outside. You can adjust the brightness to make it easier to read in different lighting conditions. The light is very easy on the eyes with no glare like you can get from a clip on light.

I have a Kindle Touch and the Paperwhite and prefer the Paperwhite. I don't even use the Touch anymore.

To go back a page, touch the screen on the left. To go forward, touch the right side. Very easy.

I do not like reading with a backlight, so I prefer the lighted cover. If the only issue with your Kindle is that you can't see at night, I would recommend saving it and buying the lighted cover.

The paperwhite is not backlit it is frontlit, so it is essentially the same as having a lighted cover, the difference being the lights are built into the bezel of the device instead of the cover. It does not have any of the eye strain that is the major problem with backlit devices.

Also the paperwhite is an e-ink reader. It is the same as the older readers with the addition of the lights set in the bezel.

I have had the last three generations of the kindle, and have loved them all!

I have a Kindle 2ND Gen, Fire and Paperwhite. For reading the Paperwhite is the best. It is so light and easy to hold. And the screen is wonderful.

When you first start the kindle it shows you the touch areas. There is a strip at the top to touch that will bring up the shopping cart and home buttons (and a few others that I can't think of off the top of my head).

The left third (maybe) of the screen is essentially the back button, which leaves the rest as going forward.

While just casually reading, I've never had it more forward more than one page, but I have bumped it while shifting positions or setting it down or even sneezing once (I don't know what I hit there, but it took me a long time to find my place again, lol).

I have the original Kindle, with the keyboard.

I think I "need" the paperwhite! Well, not need, want, lol. But I like the large buttons on both sides to page forward or backward.

I have a second gen and bought a Kindle Fire about a month ago. I had basically put my 2nd gen away and had been reading on my iPad. The Fire is lighter and smaller than the iPad and I like reading on it, it's very similar to reading on the iPad. As others have mentioned you can tap the right side to go forward and left side to go back. The WiFi is excellent, I was able to be on the beach on a beach chair and read but still be online, it picked up the WIFI from the condo behind me, something my iPad would not do. Well worth the price considering how much my 2nd gen cost brand new!

Thanks everyone! I decided to go with the Paperwhite. I was able to see the 6" e-ink and the paperwhite side by side and the e-ink is just like my 2nd generation Kindle as far as screen color goes. I'm excited to start using the Paperwhite! Thanks for all the input!

I have the Paperwhite and it is awesome! It can be a bright sunny day and is still easy to read. I have one of those automatic covers that turns it on the second you open the cover. the only swipe you need is when you turn it on . I love my Kindle fire, too but the Paperwhite is the best for reading by far.
