Kindle battery?

For those who own the Kindle 2, what happens when the battery dies? You can't replace it like in the Kindle 1, so do you have to return it to Amazon? Does anyone know how much it would cost to replace and how long the battery is supposed to last ??

Amazon will replace it free of charge for the first year. After that, the Amazon factory needs to replace it for a cost of $59.

It looks like they changed to the non-replaceable battery (and no SD card) in an effort to make the Kindle 2 thinner than the Kindle 1.

Some articles say the original battery should last for 2+ years.

That's just from reading online articles. Amazon is pretty silent on it, from what I've been able to see. You might want to email customer service about it just in case.

Places are starting to sell kits now to replace the K2 battery, just like you can replace your own iPod battery if you feel inclined.

As for what happens -- nobody really knows exactly how pain free the exchange process will be. The k2 isn't that old and the batteries on them simply aren't failing yet except in very rare cases. The Amazon warranty does guarantee the battery.

I did email Amazon cs, but haven't heard anything yet. I'm trying to decide between the Kindle 2 and the Nook. The Nook has a replaceable battery, but I know people love their Kindle. I'm sooo confused right now....

Well as I said before, assuming the nook works like all the literature says it will - I don't think either one is a bad choice.

It is like saying "What is better? A snickers or a milky way?" Some people will prefer the snickers, some will prefer the Milky Way and some will want both but no matter which you choose the chances are pretty good that you will like your candy bar.

So my advice is to relax and choose and start figuring out what books you want to put on your eReader because that is really the most important part.

That's true, to an extent. The reason I'm looking at the Sony eReader (haven't looked at the Nook, yet) over the Kindle is so that I can check books out of my local library, rather than buy them.

And if you buy the Sony, you will probably really enjoy reading your books too.
