I believe I can read books on my Kindle while on a cruise (Eastern Caribbean), but what about the Kindle app that's on my iPad. Would there be any charge for that?

You can read your books on the Kindle App as long as the books are downloaded. To check, go to theKindle App and at the bottom you will see Cloud and Device. As long as the books show up under Device you can read them. If they are in the Cloud you need WiFi. Go to Amazon dot com they have lots of free books to download.

The downside to reading books on the kindle app on your ipad is that you won't be able to read them in the sun.

I read on/use my iPad and iPhone all the time in the sun. It's not ideal - and not as easy to read as an eInk reader - but it can be done. Most of us with iPads have figured it out. :rotfl: I do have a classic Nook as well, and never use it because it's just not as versatile. Love reading on my iPad!

OP - in addition to Kindle books on your iPad, you can also add books from BN.com on their nook app (they have a selection of free books, and have a different freebie every Friday if you sign up for their newsletter or like the nook on Facebook), and if your library has ebook lending, you can read those as well (ours uses Overdrive, which also has a nice iPad app for reading). Just make sure the books are downloaded to the device (whatever device - nook, kindle, iPad) before you get on the ship and you shouldn't incur any charges.

I usually put all of my electronics in airplane mode with wireless turned off as soon as we get on the ship. That way I know we won't end up with charges we don't want. Try it at home and see what you can use on your device - that will let you know what you need to load in order to be able to read it on the ship.

Have a great cruise!

Great information PP. Thanks! What about playing games like Magic Puzzles, 7 Words, and Temple Run?

If you aren't playing against someone, it should be fine. I know Temple Run should work. Things like Draw Something and Words with Friends require Internet, though.

DD has wifi only devices and plays lots of flag quiz and icon quiz games in the car. She also plays some is the Tiny Worlds games (tiny zoo, etc) which are better with Internet, but can be played without.

Really the best way to tell is to disable the wifi at home. You can try what you want to use, and if it doesn't work, you still have time to look for other games/apps.

Good luck!
