Kindle 2 or Barnes and Nobel Nook?

I have the Kindle 2 as well and can't say enough good things about it! I love it! Reading books from the library is not an issue for me so, I did not need that option. The keyboard at the bottom is great for searching for books and authors. I love the adjustable font size and have had no problem with glare at all.

I ordered a new book today in the car on the way to the Dr. Had it immediately. It is amazing how quick it is.

I bought a leather case. I wanted one that made it feel like I was holding a book. I also bought a waterproof Kindle case for the beach this summer.

Just in case you missed it...love, love, love my Kindle!:thumbsup2

I have the Kindle 2 and I love, LOVE it.

The keyboard is used for making notes right in your book, if you are into that. As well as for buying books and looking up authors and you can do footnotes and all kinds of things.

I got the fuscia leather cover and it holds like a book. I also bought the plastic sheeting for the face, so that it will protect it from me and diet coke spits and various scratches.

I am currently reading The Jungle Book, if anyone was interested.

ETA: Oh, when we were in Hawaii, I ordered some books from the Kindle and they were sent to me in seconds. And I was on top of a volcano at the time.

Another huge Kindle fan here. Both my DH and I have Kindles and love them. We did check out some of the Nook reviews online and it seems that Barnes and Noble may have released it too early in order to make the holiday season timeframe. As another poster said, there are a ton of complaints about it. From what I've heard, the customer service has been less than ideal. On Friday, I had an issue with my Kindle where part of the plastic cover on it seemed to be lifting slightly and today I have a new Kindle waiting at home for me. No questions asked, they shipped me a new one immediately and just said to send my original one back within 30 days. The customer service with Amazon is a big positive for me.

Also, Amazon posts a ton of free books on their website and contrary to popular belief, you can purchase books from other websites and use them on your Kindle. The one thing missing though is library compatibility.

Kindle vs Nook:

Kindle has been around longer - has quite a following and lots of support. I have yet to hear about a dissatisfied Kindle owner.

Nook released in December. Units are backordered but everyone I have corresponded with loves theirs. (Mine ships on Friday  )

The nook does have a keyboard - it comes up in the touchscreen. Kindle has small keys at the bottom. Nook has a user-replaceable battery - Kindle, like iPhone, must be sent in to replace the battery. Both have about the same amount of storage, but nook has a slot for an SD card, expanding the amount of storage.

Kindle's operating system is Amazon proprietary while nook uses Google's Android (I have a feeling it will not be long before apps become available). Nook also support the ePub format that most libraries with ebooks support. Both support PDF.

Both use AT&T 3G wireless, but nook also uses WiFi.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

I am leaning towards the Kindle. Apparently it is quicker in terms of start up time, has a longer battery life, etc. What is the keyboard actually used for? Book purchases?

Yes, you can also surf the web (although I have TRIED and it is extremely slow and hard to do).

Initially there were some problems (same as Sony and Kindle). B&N patched the nook within a week of release. New nooks are coming with the latest version of the OS and don't have the problems anymore.

DH gave me a Kindle 2 for Christmas - I absolutely love it! He did a lot of research first, wanting to be sure he understood the differences. Then, he saw this NY Times article http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/10/technology/personaltech/10pogue.html?_r=4 and decided on the Kindle. He bought it with the plain black leather cover. I added the 2-year warranty, which covers drop damage, because I can be less than dexterous sometimes.

I've also got the Sony Reader. I LOVE being able to download from the library for free.

There's only a log in page there. I'd like to read it, do you have another link?

When you guys talk about downloading from the library can you borrow new books? Is there any kind of wait?

Remember, though, that Amazon will store all of your Amazon-purchased material for free on its servers. If you want to "clean out" your list of books you can wirelessly send them back to Amazon and free up the space on your Kindle. Want to read them again? Just send them back to your Kindle and you'll have them right back.

Great to know. Thanks for the update. As much as I love my Kindle, I'm happy to see that there is more competition in the e-reader market. Hopefully that will continue to drive improvement and price competition. :thumbsup2

It took me longer to pick out the case for it than it did to decide which one. I ordered the Kindle. I went to Cnet and a couple of other sites, and although it was very close, Kindle has upgraded some of their features so they have an edge over Nook; longer battery life, quicker response, etc. I was going to get the neoprine case but I read a couple reviews that it smelled bad. I have a sensitive nose, so I opted for leather, because leather always smells good. I added a light and now I will wait for it to arrive. Thanks everyone!

I LOVE my kindle! It has been wonderful. I much prefer reading on it than I do actual books now, which is weird to me. I don't think you can go wrong with it!

Congrats on you new Kindle! I got mine in July and have barely put it down. I love it! I'm sure you'll be happy with it.

Here is the link for the NYT review of the Nook. Here is a link for a WSJ review. I didn't think that either review was very favorable.

We are a three Kindle family. We also use the Kindle app on our iPhones. It's good when you are stuck somewhere without your Kindle and just want to read for a few minutes. I couldn't see reading for hours on it. We're big Kindle fans, but I haven't tried the Sony e-Reader or Nook to compare with.

Congrats on your new purchase Dawn! :thumbsup2

I have an Oberon case and love it. Definitely pricier that some other cases, but the quality is really nice and the cases feel like works of art. You can view the cases as oberondesign dot com. I have an m-edge go! case that also works well, but I heard a story about how the amazon hinge case cause some Kindles to crack and was scared to continue using something with hinges.

:goodvibes

I have the Sony ereader touch...LOVE IT! No glare problems for me and it's light, thin, and the perfect size. Being able to change font size is great for these older eyes.

I did read that but then I read a lot of favorable reviews that seemed to indicate that if you secured the kindle properly, it wouldn't happen, so that is the one I got. Wish me luck with that case.

I have heard nothing about this? Can you give me the link?
I have had mine for quite some time (actually bought Kindle 1- gave it to DD when 2 came out) and have had no issues so far.

I too read about the Kindle cracking with the Amazon case. I've had mine since last March - both the kindle and the case - and have had no problems. I read somewhere that the kindles only crack if you read with a finger between the kindle and the back of the case. I've been guilty of doing that, but since reading about it, have avoided it as much as possible.

Here is a really cool site to check out:

http://www.kindleboards.com/

Really good discussions and advice on the Kindle.

Also, don't forget to go to decalgirl dot com to get a skin for your kindle. Great selection of designs and super customer service!
