Kindergarten - what do they need?

Help, my baby is leaving me for school in about 2 1/2 weeks...

What all do they need for kindergarten? Is there a list out there or does the school normally supply you with something?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A week before both my boys started K we received a note from their new teacher and a list of what to bring. Basically they needed a back pack they could manuver themselves. That was it.

Hope this helps. Guess you could always call the school and ask too.

When my kids started Kindergarten we had to go to a round-up and that is when they gave us a supply list.
Pencils, crayons, markers, scissors, erasers, glue, kleenex, sandwich baggies, backpack, gym shoes. Just the basics.

Our local staples had a basic list if your looking for ideas. Or you could contact his school to see if they register with any local stores. Basic necessities are:

backpack
Lunchbox
pencil box (one that snaps shut)
24 crayons
box of 8 watercolors
2 boxes of 8 broad-tip washable markers
2 (4 oz. bottles) Elmer's White School Glue (not the "no run" kind)
2 large glue stick
Little scissors
2 husky pencils - beginners pencils
1 big eraser
4 three-prong pocket folders
1 wide-lined spiral notebook
1 paint shirt or smock with name on it (any shirt will do)
1 box Ziploc gallon or quart-size bags
1 box 250-count Kleenex
Bottle of hand sanitzer/purell
Wet wipes

Some of these items may be exclulded at your childs school as well as there may be other items that your sons teacher will request. Hope this helps. My baby starts preschool on Sept 12th!

Thanks. We do have orientation the Thursday before school starts. Maybe they will give us a list. I do have the backpack, crayons, markers, pencils and erasers.

The time is coming so quickly...

We are looking at enrolling instead of homeschooling---I picked up the list for the school we would send her. It also included a "Kindermat" for rest time.

all of our county schools have lists out for the required supplies. I know ours is very particular on what brands are requested. we went yesterday for meet the teacher and brought our supplies and it was put into the bins along with everyone else's. DD started today and it went well so I can rest alittle easier now!

Don't go buy much until you get the list. Our districts list doesn't have on it the same things it did last year, and some of it is very specific. Crayola crayons, eight pack. Kleenex. Black 1 1/2 inch three ring binder. With school cuts we are funding all the supplies, so we provided white board markers.

Wow! Do I ever feel lucky, we only had to get our kindergartner a backpack, crayons and a glue stick!

When you go to orientation, ask if the school sells something like a "school pack" so you don't have to go shopping. My sister's kids both get the required stuff that way all my sister has to buy is a back pack.

BTW - the LL Bean Backpacks are very very good. My son has had his for three years and he abuses it completely, I just throw it in the wash and air dry it and it looks brand new again. Yes, it did cost about $40 but so far that has worked out to be just $13.33 a year for the back pack! Much cheaper than the ones at staples that break within the first few months.

I would think you would get a list at registration or testing. Our school has all of their class lists on their website. I agree with the above post, don't buy a lot. My girlfriend's little girl needed only to get 2 boxes of tissues and a backpack!

As a past first grade teacher brands do make a difference. Crayola crayons, Elmer's glue and Fiskkar's scissors are the best. But don't buy alot until you meeting. Som eschools charge a fee and provide the supplies

I feel your pain! I did get a supply list at Kindergarten roundup, but I have no clue about the bus, the first day of school (do I go with?) and on and on. When do I pay the fees? Do I need to take the proof of vaccines/dental exam before school starts? I just have no clue! I hopefully check the mailbox every day for information but it never comes. With a little over a week before school starts I guess I better break down and make a <gasp> phone call!

Why do the schools wait till the last minute to let us know what we will have to fund? My son starts (has never been to any school/daycare) Sept. 12th - and by then all the sales will be gone. Thankfully I always purchase the basics anyway so we have some around the house. So by the time I go in for orientation I will only have to buy a couple things. I can't see why the school systems don't send a note home at the end of the previous year with next years supplies. They can't really change that much year to year can they?

I finally got the bus information the other day but still have questions regarding that. DD will be at the babysitters twice a week and only for drop off. Didn't know if I had to send a letter each time, or just inform the of the two days and then use a letter if something changes??? who knows??? Seems confusing but I'm hoping it's just because it's new...

I got a letter in the mail for my girls saying that the only thing they needed was a backpack, and if we wanted to make donations of kleenex, glue sticks or anything else that was appreciated but there was no specified list. We dont pay for bus transportation, but from past experiences with my other kids any money that may be needed for snack or milk will be sent home by a notice the first day of school.

I did receive information regarding snacks. It's $6.00 a month. DD will also be going all day so I've been reading the thread regarding packing lunches.

I'm so not looking forward to all of this !!!

We need to buy the backpack, lunch box, pencil box and any other items that our child might want (like colored pencils and markers), but those things aren't required.

My son is starting first grade this year....it's almost harder on me than when he started kindergarten last year! This year he'll be gone ALL day! Sniff sniff!
