Inpired by the fractions in kindergarten post.

My son is heading to kindergarten in the fall. Well… maybe. He is a summer birthday boy, and the cutoff is Sept 1 for being 5, so I am not sure if he is ready. They don’t do the screening here until the first 3 days of school in Sept. at which time they are already enrolled. Can you share what they asked of your child during kindergarten screening so I can have an idea if he’s ready? (A friend of mine said her son got tagged with gross motor skills because he couldn’t skip- I honestly don’t even know if my DS can skip, it's not something that has come up.)

TIA

In our district they don't screen for gross motor skills. They did letter recognition, begining sounds like pick the 2 pictures that begin with the b sound, rhyming, name writing and numbers. There may have been a few other things as well, I just can't remember them.

If I were in your shoes, I would think about contacting and or all of the following...
a kindergarten teacher or an elementary school teacher
the school your child would attend
another mom with a slightly older child, preferable one in kindergarten (She might remember the assessments)
the school board office - maybe check the website & see if there is an asessment office you could contact.

Good luck.
agnes!

Each school is different but the ones we had were
The hop on one foot
cutting with scissors
Letter recognition- both upper and lower case
colors
numbers

If you are considering holding him back I think if you contact the school they can assess him earlier.

My son just had his yesterday, but he is 4. They want it done here between 3 and 4.

Here is what they did:

They asked him to build a tower with small blocks

They asked him about several different colors

They asked him what certain pictures were (leaf, nail, car....)

They asked him to count and then asked him to put a certain amount of these little bears in the teachers hand. First it was 3 and then 5 and then 9. To see that they can not only count but actually count out objects.

They asked him to copy some shapes. A circle, + sign, an X, a square and a rectangle.

They asked him to walk with one foot in front of the other, hop on one foot down a line of tape on the floor and stand on one foot for 10 seconds.

They asked him to pick out the object that was different on several sets of pictures.

They asked him what certain parts of the body were. Head, cheeks, back, ankle and heel. I was wondering how a four year old was supposed to know what a heel was. He just kept saying foot and getting mad at her everytime she asked him.:lmao:

Then they did a hearing and eye screening.

I think that is about it.

thanks everyone!

Based on the above, he is mostly on track (he can't hop more than one bounce, but close on most else).

He's a little socially immature, and I think he might get tagged for speech therapy (he uses Y and W sounds in place of Ls, and speaks very s-l-o-w-l-y concentrating hard on each word, where most adults tune him out mid-sentence). From listening to the other moms at preschool describe how well their kids can read, he is behind - he knows all the capital letters and 1/2 of lower case, and about 1/2 of the letter sounds, but can't yet put two letter sounds together to make a word. He does love to 'read' though- he has a lot of books memorized and tells them to his sister, I know he is not reading the actual words, but I hope that once it clicks he takes off with it.

thanks again! I feel better now.

When the kids here go for the testing the June prior to entering kindergarten they are tested on recognizing their alphabet caps and lower case, writing their abc's caps and lower case, writing their name, basic math, 2 plus 2 etc, knowing their address and phone number and details-they show them 4 pictures and one will have a man holding a baby boy and a girl in the front, the other will have a man holding a baby girl with a boy in front another will have a man holing a baby boy with a boy in front the other will have a man holing a baby girl with a girl in front and they will ask them- show me the picture of the man showing a boy to a girl and they have to pick out the right picture, they do about 15 of those. They also show them shapes, circle, rectangle, trapozoid, triangle and ask them to show them the triangle, cirle etc..funny thing with that one was my duaghter had this leap frog game and it had a trapazoid on it and she points to the trapazoid and says "thats a trapazoid"- they looked at me and said "she is the only one that knew what that was"- I had to tell them it wasn't because she was extra smart, it happened to be on a video game LOL.
But that is how they are tested and in Sept the ones that need help with that are taken out of class to resource room to catch them up. I was actually shocked at how much they expect them to know going into kindergarten. I know in her 4 year old preschool they did all the work that we USED to do in kindergarten, learning the abc's cutting out 4 pictures of things starting with the letters of the week for homework etc. They don't do any type of gross motor skills testing at all.

Here's our Kdg Readiness Test

ETA: If a parent feels a child is socially immature, our school recommends holding back a year with placement in a PK (+4) program for additional socialization. My DS was extremely shy and, with a conference w/his 4 yo program teachers, I decided on placement in a 4+ program so he could get the additional socialization w/o the heavy academics. DS has a mid-October bday. I am so thankful that I did b/c he totally opened up. When he went to Kdg. he was almost 6 yo. I could def. see a difference bet. him and some of the other boys in the class. Even now that DS is in 5th grade, he is more mature than most of the boys in his class and tends to make better decisions.
