Kindereggs?

Well I guess now I know why I can't find them in the stores.

I brought loads of these home from the UK in 2001 for my nieces and nephews. No body stopped me. Hmmm....can't believe they're "Illegal."

When we go on vacation and cross into Canada, we always buy a bunch. We have also been known to buy them on Ebay. I simply supervise my children and make sure they don't shove the whole thing into their mouth and create a choking hazard (much like I do with ANY food). Unfortunately a few irresponsible law-suit happy people ruined this for us too.

The law goes back decades - I think back to the 1930s. It isn't a recent thing targeted at Kindereggs.

They are illegal to sell here. Its perfectly legal to bring them in.

No they are not, wouldn't want a child to be upset when the eggs get confiscated and don't want to see the "I was detained at customs because of my Kinderegg habit..:lmao:"

CBP Advises Kinder Chocolate Eggs Banned from Import into United States

Pembina, N.D. — With the Easter season upon us, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials in North Dakota want importers and the traveling public to know that Kinder Chocolate Eggs are banned from import into the United States. The prohibited Kinder Chocolate Eggs will be seized and destroyed upon entry into the country.

The eggs are prohibited because a toy surprise hidden inside poses a choking and aspiration hazard for children younger than three years of age. The Kinder eggs are hollow milk chocolate eggs about the size of a large hen’s egg, and are usually packaged in a colorful foil wrapper. The toy within the egg is contained in an oval-shaped plastic capsule that has small parts requiring assembly. Each egg contains a different toy.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has determined that this product fails to meet small parts requirements for children less than three years of age. Additional information regarding unsafe toys and product recall announcements can be found at CPSC’s Web site. ( U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission ) CBP and CPSC work jointly to ensure the safety of imported goods by examining, sampling and testing products that may present substantial hazards.

Travelers are encouraged to visit the CBP Web site for useful information and publications such as “Know Before You Go” regarding what items travelers can legally bring into the United States. ( CBP HomePage )

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.

I have never heard of Kinder Eggs until this thread:confused3. And now I can't stop thinking about them :rotfl:

They seem pretty harmless to me.

Oh-I love Kindereggs! I worked for a German company up until this past Oct. (left to go to nursng school). They are illegal to ship here. However, you can bring them with you from a trip. Several co-workers brought us all some back through customs w/o any problems. I love that chocolate & kids love the prizes!

I just read where an above poster was detained at customs. I just got some right before I left the company. The guy bought them at the airport in Germany & brought them to the office when he got off the plane w/o any problems. That's weird.

Kindereggs the favorite when we lived in Germany. Subsequent business trips back to Europe (or vacations to Canada:thumbsup2), we'd bring back dozens. I was a bit concerned when a few months ago I sawa blog they'd now be confiscated at customs.

I'm happy to say, I brought some home from a trip last month and no one was the least bit concerned about them at customs.

I purchase kindereggs all the time when traveling to visit DH's relatives/friends in the Netherlands, German and the UK. I have a collection of the toys in my guest room!!! Now I know I can purchase in Canada.... we will be going there on vacation later this year so I will add to my collection.

One of the reasons I love them is for the toys - reminds me when I ws a kid and getting a box of Cracker Jacks and there was a real toy surprise in them!!!!!

full access to Kinder eggs is one of DS's all time favourite things about living in Germany:rotfl:

Between this and the fact that Harry Potter had to be "translated" for sale in the US, one starts to wonder what the "powers that be" think about American children.

ETA - I am not saying anything about American children. It's the "powers that be" that amuse me.

This is exactly what I was thinking. Why oh why do we (meaning those powers that be) feel our children are incapable of handling a treat that children in many other countries manage to handle just fine? Or maybe we just don't trust the parents to be smart enough not to hand one over to a toddler (now having said toddler berak it open and take out the toy first works nicely).

Wow, who knew chocolate could be such a threat to the country:lmao:
I have never heard of them, but now I want to check them out!!!

I buy these all the time (well maybe not all the time, but often) for my kids they love them and the toy inside I just saw them at CVS today and I see them in other stores a lot.

Wow, I didn't know they were illegal.

I sent a bunch to a friend in a little "treats of Canada" package I sent to her. I knew you didn't have them in the US but didn't know why.

My kids love them and look forward to the giant ones at Easter. We have a large collection of Kinder toys.

That can't be right. I can buy them here. They are displayed in the open. I doubt there is anything illegal going on. :confused3

Where in Maryland? I have not been able to find any since they were banned in the US. I have friends in Europe who send them to me.

As a pp said, we have them everywhere! In fact, Costco sells the GIANT ones near Easter and Xmas. My DD has been collecting them since she was little. Wal-mart here also sells ones that are "Disney" eggs. Just like Kinder eggs but are Disney sponsored, and therefore have various Disney figurines inside them! party: My 100th post!

Pardon my ignorance, as I've never heard of these before.

Is the chocolate really that good or do you just collect them for the toys? :confused3

In Rockville, in a little strip mall off 355. They don't always have them, but they usually do.

Yikes.........i have sent these to many friends as i had no idea you couldnt send them..............they are everywhere all year round here and at Easter and Christmas you can get the giant ones........

I could see if the toy was not in the capsule but its not like the small pieces can get out of them capsules...heck i can hardly get them things open for my kids to get the toy...........
