Kinder Surprise Egg Questions in Ports

US has a ban since the 30s on candies with embedded toys, also a law that requires all toys that accompany candy to be safe for any age and Kinder Egg toys are safe for age 3 and up.

In Canada you buy them anywhere chocolate bars are sold. In ports I would imagine it's the same. I wouldn't risk bringing them into the U.S. I've heard there are fines if you are caught with them. They aren't the best tasting chocolate but the kids like them for the cheap toys.

I don't like the chocolate they have on the non-Kinder eggs (like the Disney ones) but I do enjoy the Kinder chocolate that is a milk chocolate shell on the outside and white chocolate on the inside. The chocolate on the knockoffs taste waxy to me.

I am usually a rule follower but we always bring them back from Europe and haven't got into to trouble. Worst case scenario we stand there eating them before be allowed entry.

I don't like any of it but the kids like anything with sugar in it. Personally I prefer dark chocolate, which they can't stand so it's perfect.

  • We ordered a bunch of "2nds" on ebay and they shipped from Germany. these were ones that were just the toys in the plastic egg, where they had not been coated with chocolate. Bright them to a family Christmas party and everyone had a ball, putting the toys together. The toys have very small parts and great mechanisms to make gears and wheels. I can see where they would be consider not for young children, given all the small little parts. I will tell you they were so much Fun. I think I still have about 25 of the unopened plastic eggs left.

I bought a box of 24 for $30 on Amazon for Christmas... A lot less hassle than hunting for them on a port somewhere.

I didn't realize that they are banned in the USA. I am from Australia and we did our first Disney Cruise on The Fantasy in 2014 and looking to do another 7 night cruise. I was going to get some of these for the FE once we have booked etc. Thanks for letting us know - customs would of stopped us b/c of these. My DDs luv these - Im happy to send some to anyone if you are allowed to receive them.

I do love how the US basically has laws that say that we are all stupid. I mean parents in all these other countries seem to be capable of making sure their kids don't die when they give them a kinder egg. So either this law is unnecessary or the US is full of morons.

I have wanted to try one of these since I first heard of them, not because I think the chocolate will be that great (I'm sure I can find better chocolate) but just to say I have had one.

Now they are also banning all the British Cadbury chocolate here. Hershey's has the brand Cadbury for use in America and argued that it will cause confusion for stores to sell British Cadbury and shouldn't be allowed. So again Hershey is trying to claim that all its customers are morons and can't figure out what they are buying (although really I think its that Hershey's has realized its customers are smart and the British stuff tastes better!)

I think the normal Cadbury chocolate though your still allowed to bring to the US. It just can't be sold in stores.

I don't see how it's different than cracker jacks or toys in boxed cereal. The toy is wrapped and not actually imbedded in the chocolate.

Is the USA the only country in the world that has banned KINDER Eggs? Our son is is now 5 has had these in the cupboard since he was about 2 years old (rotating stock, not the same stale candies LOL). He hasn't eaten the surprise toy yet. :P

They will stop you at the U.S. border. My brother had to dispose of a case at customs.
Really? This is interesting. I bought some kinder eggs home (in the U.S.) from Japan and they were never confiscated. Perhaps it's the brand? But it was the same concept (chocolate egg w/toy inside).
Perhaps it's quantity? I think I had 3 when coming back.

I think it's whether you ge caught or not. I know people who have travelled with all kinds of crazy things (mostly foods) and didn't get caught and then you hear of someone who gets caught and either has to throw it out or pay a fine.
