Kinda odd question about state abbreviations

There's a very good reason people don't refer to Kentucky by it's abbreviation. KY anyone?

I basically say the entire name for most.
The exceptions are New Jersey, which is just Jersey to me. Whenever someone asks where I'm from, I never say the 'new' I just say Jersey. and I say PA alot too, I dont know why tho, i just do.

The only thing I can think of realted to this is our nation's capital. I always refer to it as DC. I sometimes say NC instead of North Carolina, but not often. I also refer to the big city out west as LA more often than not (instead of Los Angeles).
