Kilts

As a Scot I was curious as to how often men / boys are seen on Formal nights wearing Kilts. We havent sailed DCL yet and are only doing the 4 day so no formal night anyway.
Last cruise was on the Golden Princess and my DDad, DH and 2 DS all wore their kilts.
They constantly got requests for photographs, Tha Captain was a Scot that sailing too.

I'm waiting for my first cruise (2 more weeks!!), but I think that would be great to see your guys all dressed up in their kilts on formal night!!

I didn't see anyone wearing kilts on our first cruise, but I think it would be great if your guys did. I'm sure they would get a lot of (positive) attention, like on your last cruise.

I didn't see any kilts on our cruise, but I think it would be wonderful! If my husband were Scotish, I'd buy him one!

I think the kilts are a great idea! But (pun intended) be awful careful, it can be quite windy on the outer decks!!! HA HA HA!!

I have often seen men/boys wearing their kilts on formal night...I guess it all depends on how many Scots are sailing on a particular cruise and how many want to wear their kilts!!! It has definately been done, though!!!

Actually, in this same vein...I have seen men wearing their various armed forces uniforms and even saw a bride wearing her wedding gown to formal night....even though she got married a few weeks before the cruise.

My father was is a Marine (vet) and he wears his bright red marine corp blazer to formal night when he cruises...gets many compliments too!!!

Quite a while back there was this same question and everyone heartly agreed that the men should wear their kilts (most of the encouragement came from the ladies on this board ).

The second question asked back then was could the guy in question bring his bagpipes and have some place to practice and most thought that it would not be appropriate. I'm not sure that DCL would allow bagpipes on the cruise since they have a "zero tolerance policy" regarding weapons

I think they would great in their Kilts. Maybe it's me but I think that the wedding gown was a little too much. If she had been married while on the cruise that would have been one thing, but a few weeks later

Slightly off topic, but............. When were sailing out of the harbor in St. Thomas last week, there was a man standing on the bow of the Explorer of the Seas playing the bagpipes. Sounded pretty neat drifting across the water.........

When we were onboard for the 4/3/04 cruise...we had met a family on these boards that were Scots......we had a terrible time finding them until they posted the pictures from formal night (2nd nite) and we found the picture of the man with the kilt....needless to say the meet was very successful and our kids became fast friends.

We sailed in sept 2002 and my husband decided he was wearing his kilt not just for formal night but semi-formal night. We only saw one other guy on board with a kilt. My husband loved all the attention.

Kids were on asking "why is that man wearing a skirt?"

Everytime he went to the toilet, he was gone for ages as people kept on asking to get their picture taken with him.

I came back from the toilet at one point to find some woman trying to find out if he was a true scot by taking a picture up the back of his kilt

He went to get water up on deck and disappeared for an hour. I thought he'd fallen overboard, but a couple had stopped him and asked him to explain on video what all the parts of the outfit were for. So he is now somewhere is an American home on video.

We are cruising again on may 15th and he plans to take his kilt again...I'd better be prepared for him disappearing again.

I am not Scots myself, but can't think of a better reason than formal night to wear your formal kilt.

I absolutely love to see a man wearing one...Sean Connery, Sting and a fellow named Patrick from Tech TV.

I can see that the kilt might be a bit hindering if there is a big gust of wind...I do hope there's more than just your bum under it. And I'm not sure celebrity status is what you want while trying to enjoy your cruise.

But, eh, what a sight you all will be...a fine example of proud Scotsmen! I think it would be fantastic!

My dad was a Scotsman and in a pipe band, so imagine my surprise when Goofy was wearing a kilt on formal night on our October 2004 cruise. My DDs had their picture taken with him. It is a photo that we will cherish forever!

I say "Go for the kilt!" and have a wonderful time!

Thanks for all your replies, like I said it was just out of curiosity really.

The issue of gusts of wind doesnt bother DH, its a heavyweight fabric and I am sure we will have had it as windy up here in Scotland ( probably worse)

I'd love to see goofy in his kilt, wonder what tartan he is entitled to wear lol

On our Xmas Cruise I remember seeing at least one Clan Member in a Kilt.

As an Irish man married to A Scot, I say Wear your kilt proudly.


Since of course, you know we Irish actually invented the pipes.....
