We drive all over---to Florida every summer for vacation (we live in Wisconsin), to Rochester, NY for DS9 eye doctor appointments, vacations, and weekend getaways. I always pack craft kits so I have something to do as we drive. As DS gets older he wants to craft as we drive as well... so now I need ideas.

What are some of the craft kits you've done in the past? My DD is VERY crafty. She has a fold-down desktop/storage thing that straps on the back of the driver's seat so she can always fold that down and have everything at hand. I've only gone as far as to fill it with markers, stickers and paper.
I have found foam stickers that you can make a "scene" with (like it come s with suns, grass, flowers, etc.) and pack some plain paper to stick them to. There's alwasy ColorWonder stuff in there, plus each trip I add a snack and drink. Pretty basic stuff. I'd love to make things more "crafty" for her and hear what you've done in the past.

I like the crayola magic dough because it doesn't crumble like playdough (just remember some baggies to store it in) and my kiddos wanted some Bend-a-roos but the reviews I read said get the wikki stix instead, they work better and are cheaper. I found them on Amazon. We are saving them for our plane trip but I did let them use a few and they were a BIG hit.

Using those plastic art boxes (picked up during big back to school sales) I put together kits like: jewelry making kits with hemp, beads, string, findings, and tape so that youth can create as we drive.
Note pads, stickers, pencils, crayons, stamps--great on the go post card kits
Window clings so my son can decorate the vehicle windows (gotta be different)
Mega bloks kits.. so he can build and create as we drive

For me it's difficult because my son has special needs and is 9. He doesn't like "girl stuff" which according to him is an ever growing list :rotfl: and is limited to what he can do especially in the car.:confused3 I'm all about creating whenever and wherever you can so I try to keep running lists of ideas--and am constantly looking for new ideas.

Pipe cleaners - the craft sections have many different colors and the kids love to make lots of things with them.

Klutz.com has a travel section:

http://www.klutz.com/catalog/category/1004

You can use that for ideas or look for discounts on the books. Sign up for their email list and they send sales notices to you. Amazon sells Klutz books at a discount.

I second the wikki stix.

You guys are amazing. I'm still trying to figure out how to get around. The amount of information is truely appreciated.. especially the link you provided. We have a 15 hour drive, and this will be great.:yay::yay:

I just saw a Crayola model magic Cinderella castle kit on ebay.I thought this would be so cute for a little princess.Wish I had one :lovestruc.

I also saw a Pirates of the Carribean one.

I cut out post cards from cardstock paper and bring stickers, stamps, markers, etc for the kids to make their own postcards to mail to friends and family from vacation. I've also bought the Crayola color wonder finger paints for the kids too. My kids are 8 & 3 1/2 so far all of the above as well as colored paper, crayons, coloring books keep them busy. My 8 yr old daughter also loves to keep a journal. You could get the kids each a notebook and have them decorate it and use the book as a travel journal to write things down in. My daughter also adds photos after our trip.

What about tin foil art??? A roll of foil is cheap at the store. That's something that everyone (well except the driver maybe) can participate in during the ride. Tear off sheets of any size you want. Then everyone makes ________. What ever you decide blank is!!
