Kids ticket to adult..

I have a freind who is taking her grandchildren to WDW in November. Her grandson was 9 when the original ticket was bought and is 10 now. She has 2 days left on their hopper tickets.. Does she have to upgrade his ticket to an adult for the remaing 2 days?

Or can she still use the ticket as a child and then purchase an upgrade on an extra days that they choose to add?
